How to connect shared printer connected to Win'98 PC?

Hi Everyone!

I currently have a printer which is directly attached to a PC running Win'98. This printer is shared out and a few PCs make use of this printer.

Recently I managed to get a sever installed with Linux RedHat 7.0 to also make use of this printer by using Samba.

I want to get my HP D370 server to also make use of this printer. I wanted to use Samba to do this. But when I did a search at the HP knowledge base, I noticed that Samba can configure to print on HP-UX if there is HP JetDirect installed on the printer. Is this true?

If not can someone tell me what needs to be done in order for me to make use of the printer.

All assistance are appreciated!! Thks!

An alternative to SAMBA is to use LPD - on the UNIX machine you'd use SAM to set up a remote printer (check the box saying it's a BSD printer), and you'd have to have an LPD server set up on the machine. To the best of my knowledge, Win98 does not ship with an LPD server, so you'd have to buy another package. We use Netmanage's Chameleon, but there are other packages as well. Just set up the IP address for the printer to be the Win98 machine's IP. At least in Chameleon, anything sent to that UNIX "printer" will print on the Win98 machine's default printer.

Re: How to connect shared printer connected to Win'98 PC?

It's a three step process

1. Get any LPD server product available for windows 98, i.e. RPM print manager Net Manage ,
Get it from here http://www.softwareforwindows.com/Printer-Tools.htm, winlpd software.

2 Share the printer.
3 edit /etc/hosts file or DNS if you are using in your hpux machine, put ip address of windows 98 machine there .
4 Go to sam and add remote printers where you have local queue name , remote queue name ( the name with which you created a printer on windows machine)
Name of the remote machine
add the printer and you are done.
