How to contact forum users?

Is there any way to contact forum users, other than using the forum? Maybe by email?
I am interested in contact a few of the participants (James Ferguson, Steffan Farrely, etc.) for some personal advice. Any idea's.

Re: How to contact forum users?

They would have to supply you with their contact info.

The forums do not provide this info.

Re: How to contact forum users?

I thought we had the option to list our email addresses but I found that, that is for HP's use. I think it would be nice if we had the option to publish our contact information. Who knows, maybe people dont want to be bothered.
I guess that I am looking for a mentor. I have been involved with HPUX for over a year now. I feel lost most of the time. I read these forums and think, I dont know anything! Just looking for some direction. Anyone interested, can email me at tfmidwest@earthlink.net
Thanks

Re: How to contact forum users?

Hi Ted,

I do publish an e-mail address (not my main one) as part of my 'personal quote'.

Re: How to contact forum users?

The forums are a wonderful place to learn. Also be aware that alot of learning depends on your motivation - the man pages, web sites containing docs, experimentating (on a test system of course), etc.

I must say that I wish I had access to the forum when I was starting out. This is a valuble place to gain info and from the many responses that are posted I have the feeling that most, if not all, of your problems can researched here. As a note, this is one of several resources available to gain information, there are many more as noted. It would not be a good idea to rely solely on the forum to solve issues you may encounter. Doing the research and learning for yourself helps the learning process. Just posting a question and getting the answers does not help you or anybody else much in the long run.

As a final note, you can do a search on the forum for issues that have already been answered as opposed to posting the same question again.

Remember, most individuals who respond do take the time from their schedules to assist those in need. Be considerate of those who provide the assistance.

Re: How to contact forum users?

Sounds like Rick misunderstood something that I said. I have the uttmost respect for someone who takes time out to answer any of the questions posted on this board. I always give thanks and I always take the time to assign points for the answers, that is when to forums allow me to do so. I still have posts that I am not allowed to assign points too.
These forums are so slow, I have searched for hours trying to find a post that will answer my question, to no avail. Usually I need to fix the problem ASAP.
The forums are a great place to get information, I also take classes at HP when my company will send me. I read HP and Unix magazines and books. I also search the internet for sites and information.
There is so much to learn and so many areas to learn about, I just seem to stand like "a deer in the headlights" not knowing which way to go.
I mean no disrespect to anyone in the forums and always appreciate the time you take to try and help me and others out. This forum has been a lot of help to me.

Re: How to contact forum users?

My apologies if I misunderstood.

I do not want to create any ill feelings or disrepect with you or anyone else.

I agree that the forums are slow. The new look and feel is good but I do miss the faster turnaround from the old format.

Initially, my thought was to dissuade anybody from using the forums as the sole sorce of info. I realize that you are not one of those individuals. I'll wager a buck for a donut that some individuals do so.

Again, please accept my apologies.

Re: How to contact forum users?

Hi,

Another area to check out is user's groups. You can start with INTEREX (The international organization of Hewlett-Packard users), www.interex.org. You probably have a local or regional HP user's group, as well, that you can find with a web search engine or by asking around.

Re: How to contact forum users?

I included my email address in my profile, as have many other users. By the way don't feel alone. I get that same "deer in the headlights" feeling, especially when it comes to areas that I have don't have on out small system. I have one L1000 running two applications; no GUI, all text menus. Sometimes I am in awe of the responses I see in the forum. Other times I think that alot of people must have more free time than I do...maybe I am jealous, but also thankful to everyone that has helped me...

Re: How to contact forum users?

I, for one, do not wish to have contact information availiable through this forum. I get enough Recruitment firms contacting me now, no need to have someone contacting this list every time a Sys Admin quits somewhere.

Re: How to contact forum users?

Robert, hello. I work for EDS as well. I work for the Title 19 account in CT. Where are you? It is good to hear some other HP-UX experts in EDS and not only from our Solaris counterparts!

PS -- What did you think of our new commercial - the one where we built a plane in mid-air. It aired on Thankgiving day.
