How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Hi,
Say I have a Japanese written document. I was wondering (hoping) if I could view it in unix. Either by installing additional languages or using a special text editor. I was wondering how to do it?

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

what O/S : fyi japanese filesets etc are free of charge and available on the core O/S at 11.i at 11.00 I beleive they are chargeable and on the apps cds

look for bundle CDE-Japanese -> 11.11Japanese CDE filesets

However I suspect this will require an Xwindows env due the required fonts.

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

That'll teach me not to read the title ..... 11.11

ps I haven't tested this myself so you may also need to consider setting the Language either via .profile or via CDE's font panel
to one of

ja_JP.SJIS
ja_JP.eucJP
ja_JP.kana8
ja_JP.utf8

Also you will most likely need stty settings set to cs8 istrip etc ...

report back if you have problems

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Could you give me more details ?

First, I browsed through the Application CD of march 2004

all 4 cdz and couldn't find that fileset (product), I didn't use the code words because I didn't think that it would need them.

Second, When I go to the font panel in CDE, all you have is the font size ?!

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

If this is 11.i the CDE Japanese filesets will be on the core O/S
CD

As to your other question (typo by me I'm affraid) it should have read front panel

At CDE login panel

Options -> Language

ps I haven't got the March 2004 CD's to test .... should get them sometime next year ;-)

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your help. I have added the Japanese CDE filesets from the 2nd CD of the installation CD of September 2002 11i.

But, when I go to change the language through option, language,

it doesn't matter which Japanese language I try to use, the characters are all mixed acsii (instead of the real japanese characters.)

Could you give me more details as to the steps on getting this going ?

Thanks,

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Hi,

I just read the e-mails. I have a feeling that the Japanese locales are not there in your unix system. You can contact your system administrator for more information. He will definitely be in a position to help you.

Thanks,
Hemanth

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Hi Daniel,

Some questions ... where was the doc/file created ? Can you view it correctly using alternate s/w ?

What is CDE running on ie are you displaying the CDE desktop remotely from the hpux system running the dtlogin process eg PC or xterminal ?

Any chance you could attach a v.small file for me to try here ?

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Hi!
First I'd like to say thanks for all your help. Here is an RTF document with a Date printed in Japanese. Could you help me be able to view it through HP-UX ? To answer your questions. I am exporting the display back to my NT Workstation. I haven't tried directly from the Console but I will now.

Thanks, could you get back to me with your finding ?

Thanks!

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

Not a problem, but please no more points until we fix this ... I'm feeling guilty ...

your PC s/w ... reflectionsX or exceed or similar ?

this could be down to the fact that the PC does not currently have access to the required hpux fonts ... in which case setting up a font server (xfs (1) would be our first step.

do a quick search on the forums for a how to on this ... I've posted the info numerous times.

Next you'd need to configure the pc s/w to use the fonts by means of it's own font path settings ... let me the the s/w I maybe able to give you exact details on this.

Also most Pc s/w have a keyboard mapping section ... I suspect this may need to use or be set to emulate a japanese KB (I'm guessing here)

lastly I don't think this will work via the command line ( I
maybe wrong)

ps I'm a bit tied up in other things this afternoon for testing but as soon as I clear a spare 1/2 hour I'll try. fill in the blanks above would help.

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

I am using Exceed 7.0 I still haven't checked to see If I can see the fonts at the console. I will test that and if it works, then all is ok! It's just that after installing the Japanese CDE product, I tried to switch the language to Japanese (connected through Exceed) and all the characters were weird.

Once I get the correct fonts displayed at the CDE login screen, I'm sure that after I ftp my document, i will be able to see it's contents.

I'll keep you informed.

Re: How to display Japanese text on HP-UX11i.

I have an old old version of exceed but fire up exceed ->
Xconfig -> Input, if it lists a japanese kbf file I'd try using it.

It may not be needed but it would be interesting to try, if you don't have one listed try and find from exceed support/docs www.hummingbird.com ? whether this is possible with your version.

As to the fonts, once you setup xfs on the hpux system, fire up exceed -> Xconfig -> Font -> fontdatabase -> Add -> Server

add the tcp/:7000 entry accordingly ... I'll play catchup tomorrow.
