How to install net-snmp

Hi all
I have downloaded 'net-snmp-5.4-1-HP-UX_B.11.11_9000_800.tar.gz' from the net-snmp site.
The problem I have is that I cannot find documentation that explains how to install this file and to then make this the default snmp daemon on my server.
My server detail
HP-UX B.11.11 U 9000/800 1876676913 unlimited-user license.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: How to install net-snmp

Hello Brendan,

The documentation on the Net-SNMP web site seems thorough to me:

http://www.net-snmp.org/docs/readmefiles.html

"README.snmpv3"
http://www.net-snmp.org/docs/README.snmpv3.html

"README.hpux11"
http://www.net-snmp.org/docs/README.hpux11.html

Re: How to install net-snmp

Just download the depot from http://software.hp.com. It's apart of internet express. Then use swinstall to install it.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"

Re: How to install net-snmp

I have read these documents, please bear with me i am not too familiar with Unix, but I dont see how to get the package onto the server. I gunziped the file then tar -xvf 'file' from / .This extracted the files to various directories. Do I not need to run an install or setup of some kind for the system to recognize the software and then also to overide the hp snmp.

Re: How to install net-snmp

I downloaded the depot file from hp and tried the swinstall but got error messages. I will have to run it again to let you know what these errors are.

Re: How to install net-snmp

I get the following.

NOTE: The interactive UI was invoked, since no software was specified.

Then the text gui opens and I get the following.

Currently, there are no products on this source which are compatible x x
xlqqx with the target. Therefore, no products are shown.

Re: How to install net-snmp

can you post

#uname -r

I think you may be running 11.11 and not 11.23.

Re: How to install net-snmp

you need to download the 11.11 depot. you have the 11.23 depot.

Re: How to install net-snmp

I see where you're going with this.

How would I then install the .tar.gz file from the net-snmp site.

file is 'net-snmp-5.4-1-HP-UX_B.11.11_9000_800.tar'

Re: How to install net-snmp

Dunno, would have to download it myself and look into it. I am not really interested in doing that, sorry. I would suggest downloading the correct depot and use swinstall.

Re: How to install net-snmp

Have downloaded and installed with swinstall.
Do I need to do any other configuring, how do I make this the default snmp daemon and how do I stop the HP snmp daemon from running.

Re: How to install net-snmp

edit /etc/rc.config.d/SnmpMaster and set

SNMP_MASTER_START=0

then run

#/sbin/init.d/SnmpMaster stop

That will stop snmpdm.

Not sure about setting up the net-snmp agent. I would refer to the documentation:

http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net/docs/man/snmpd.html

looks like you could just create start and kill links to /opt/iexpress/net-snmp/sbin/snmpd in the approproate run levels.

Re: How to install net-snmp

I picked up some more errors and with the help of this site I found that I needed TOUR 3.1 installed as well, which also needed an additional two patches.
It is installed and running now and I am able to get the info required for my graphing. Thank you, I am impressed with your knowledge and the ease with which you assisted.
