How to make a system image ?

Hi,

We have several B1000 systems with HP-UX 10.20. All systems are the same. (processors disks....). I installed one system with HP-UX and several other applications. No I want to create a 'image' of this system or must I say 'clone ?
Do I have to use Ignite-UX ? I installed this on our server and I read the manual, but I'm not sure which commands I have to use.
Must I use 'make_sys_image'?
Create this command a 'image' ?

Can somebody help me ?

Hi,

The Ignite documentation contaions a step by step example of what you want to do (Chapter 7: Using Golden System Images).

Hi Marcel,

Refer to the below link. http://docs.hp.com/dynaweb/hpux11/hpuxen1a/b2652/@Generic__BookView

1. Also refer chapter 10. Creating Your Own Install Media(which list step by step to create install media).
2. You can also setup an Ignite-UX server and perform the client installation from it.

Re: How to make a system image ?

Hi,
with Ignite-UX installed and a tape connected to the system, you can use the command:
/opt/ignite/bin/make_recovery -A -d /dev/rmt/0mn
This command make a tape_recovery of core volume group of your installation.
After that you can boot from the tape and install a new system.
Bye,
Matteo.

Re: How to make a system image ?

If you have to install additional third party software and configure printer drivers, etc, after the OS install then "make_recovery -A" will may work out better for you as it will include all the configuration information in the tape. The golden image does not handle this. To clone the B-class, I usually install and the software and performe all the configuration on one machine and use "make_recover -A" to create a bootable tapes. On subsequent machines, I boot them off this tape and then run set_parms to change their network specific information. That saves a lot of work. Hope this helps you.
You can't turn back the clock, but you can always rewind it again.

Re: How to make a system image ?

Hi,

use make_recovery command of ignite-UX.

The command is make_recovery -A -v -C

The -C option is used to check the tape for any modifications since last backup.

The command is : check_recovery -v
Hope this is OK.

Re: How to make a system image ?

Hi..,

Thank you for all your responses.
I used the make_net_recovery. So I have a recovery archive on Ignite server. Now I can boot from lan and install the archive.
