how to recover the software distribution package

Hi Gurus

I was creating some space in my /var but accidently remove the sw directory under /var/adm/sw.
Now I cannot use software package to install any depot.

Can anyone give me any suggestions.
my OS is HP-UX 11.11.

Consider to restore from your backup.

==> U jest remove SW directory or total /var/adm/sw directory

==> R U taking any filesystem backup in Ur system monthly or weekly. Then U can recovery dependence on Ur existing backup date file.

==> Only SW directory lost then U can create a new directory (SW) same path. After new software installs U do swinstall -s

Your machine is near useless because you can't change it nor install patches.
If you don't have a backup as mentioned by Torsten, the best you might be able to do is copy /var/adm/sw from another machine with the same software installed.

The best way is to recover from a full backup as stated above.

This is just a test server.
We dont have ignite or any sort of backup running in the system.
But I am trying to copy the sw directory from another server.

Lets see what happens.

Hi,

You can tar the sw directory from source server and then ftp sw tar file to target server and untar the sw tar file in /var/adm.
By doing this method all files and directories permissions unchanged.

If its just a test system, then its time to learn some systems administration practices, first of which is to install the system cold from OS media.

Then set up a backup regimen to proven your from losing your whole system like this again.

It's tedious but even with a test system you have just learned the price of not having a good backup around,which is starting over.
