How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Hi All,

I have two L2000 HP Boxes and they have
2 Gig of RAM and I want to increase them to
4 Gig of RAM each.

How do I tell what type of memory to get?

I did an ioscan and it just said

8 memory
160 processor
166 processor

They are both dual processor 440MHZ each.

My vendor wants to know if I need a
512 board or a 1 gig board and how much
SIMM...Help I don't know how to tell...

Can someone help me here...

TIA,
Laurie

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Hi Laurie!
You can check it with STM. Do you have it installed?
If so, run stm and then run "Information" on the memmory.

If not, I think the only way is to shutdown your system and stop the startup. Then run inf on the memmory.

Still, the easiest way is installig the stm (OnlineDiag from Support CD).
good luck.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Hi, if you are going to add 2 GB then you are either going to need 4 512's or 2 1 GB memory boards as 9000 series memory has to be installed in pairs. The vendor should know the type of board just by the type of sytems. Hope this helps.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Laurie:

You can assess the physical memory chips installed by using the Support Tools Manager (STM):

# echo "selclass qualifier memory;info;wait;infolog"|cstm > /tmp/meminfo

From this output, you will be able to see the chips and the chip sizes installed. You will need to consult the hardware specifications to see if you need to add another memory carrier for more slots.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

L-class have DIMM not SIMM (K-class,R-class,etc.).L-2000 can mount 8Gb of DIMM,you can see the position in slot with echo "selclass qualifier memory;info;wait;infolog"|cstm.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

I don't have STM and

cstm>selclass qualifier memory;info;wait;infolog
^-- (SelClass) is currently disabled. --

Is there any other way to tell? I don't have
time to install any new products today?

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Hi Laurie:

The only way I know to "see" the board arrangement (and sizes) is to use the STM tool.

I would install the Online Diagnostics from the SupportPlus CDROM (or download STM from the ITRC). If I remember correctly, you no longer need to boot to affect this installation.

On the SupportPlus cdrom, you will find them under /cdrom/DIAGNOSTICS/B.11.00

If you wish, download the latest STM from here:

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=B6191AAE

Sooner or later, you, or your local engineers will want STM installed.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

You can a script called "cfg2html". The script for HP can be found on

http://members.tripod.de/rose_swe/cfg/cfg.html

This gives you more info than you need but will give you slot info along with other memory (RAM) info

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

Laurie,
As the others have said, you need to inventory what you have. STM or the script provided will do the job for you. I usually use the X-windows version - xstm.

Here are some memory basics for an L. It can have up to 2 memory carriers. Each carrier has 8 slots for a total of 16.
Memory is installed in pairs using 2 slots. If you install 1GB you will actually be putting in two 512MB DIMMs.
You need to find out if you have 1 or 2 carriers and how many slots are available. If you bought all 2GB DIMM pairs you can go up to 16GB total.
You can use 256MB, 512MB, 1GB and 2GB DIMM pairs in an L.

Honestly, your dealer should have been able to tell you this. If they don't know memory you should be careful with whatever else they suggest you buy.

Re: How to tell type of Memory? SIMM Question

I believe the script mentioned above 'cfg2html' makes a call to the STM (Diagnostics) to retrieve the information. There are only two ways to get the SIMM inventory; A) at boot up. and B) the Diagnostics (STM). There are other scripts like the one mentioned but I am certain they all get their data from the same place....the diags.
