HP_Linux vs HP_UX?
HP's Linux is purported to cost $3,000. It is the 2.4 kernel with HP additions, (to try to) justifying the expense.
What do you think?

Re: HP_Linux vs HP_UX?
Different people have different needs... it is wise for them to give people alternatives. Neither HP-UX or Linux will be exclusive on itanium. HP-UX is very advanced and developed and it will take a long time for linux to have the same features.
I read that IBM is looking forward to retiring AIX as soon as linux has all the functionality that AIX has and they promised to work to that end.

Re: HP_Linux vs HP_UX?
I have read articles about this news but haven't seen the details of the "Additions" HP has added.
I know HP is working with the folks at ximian and working on the ximian gnome.
Also there was some news of HP working with Bastille Linux folks.
Well all in all, this is definitely good news and lets hope the download section is setup quickly and ftp servers have lots of bandwidth. ;)

Re: HP_Linux vs HP_UX?
I talked to one of the PA-RISC Linux developpers at the Linux-Tag in Stuttgart,Germany this July. They're still having problems with many of the components. Especially the graphics cards seem to be a problem as HP is not (internally!) releasing the specs fast enough... :-)

Re: HP_Linux vs HP_UX?
I think HP will do a fine balancing act
adding one more O/S into their stable.
Remember, unlike SUN , HP "embraced" Windoze
in all earnest.
The move towards LINUX is the ongoing trend
in the market and a good one at that, considering the potential of the huge PC server market looking for a powerful O/S .
