HP sets oracle transaction record.

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/030730/305486_1.html

Reasons this article is important:

1) It was a superdome with Itanium 2 Processor.
2) Shows HP still cares about technological development
3) It was done with 64 bit HP-UX v2 for Itanium

This is an informational post. If inappropriate, go ahead and delete it.

Comments are welcome, its not a point thread.

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Wonder if Oracle will stop refering HP CU's to Linux now?

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Since the hardware is IA-64 you can purchase the superdome and run either Linux or HP-UX.

You still have the hardware cost and maint., but you save on the software maint.

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Hi

I was told this result was pending & was "special" but no one [at HP] would tell me what it was!!

Thanks

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Looks like they told yahoo.

It is insteresting that the transaction record is set on HP-UX, not Linux. Tells you that maybe there is some value in an Enterprise Class, Industrial Strength OS.

Oracle has had to shepard several Core OS changes through the Linux community to deal with performance problems in Linux. The good thing is they were able to get Red Hat and United Linux to make the changes.

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Either way it shakes out, I could live in a HP-UX/Linux World with NO MS.

Hopefully, Linux will force HP to lower there Software Maint. costs.

Hi,

Good news and good work from HP.

I agree with Ron, HP may consider looking at the pricing of its software for HP-UX. (Mirror-UX, GlancePlus, Online JFS,....)

In my humble opinion: HP-UX and Linux can cooperate instead of compete....

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

I think why Oracle maybe pushing Linux is for RAC.

HP-UX doesn't support the clustered file system at this time and Linux does. ( RedHat Advanced Server).

Last I heard HP-UX will have the clustered file system in 2004. I don't know which quarter.

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

Here's another story about it:

"HP's Unix beats Windows in server test"

http://news.com.com/2100-1010_3-5057972.html?tag=fd_top

I was more interested in the fact that they beat IBM - but seriously - who would spend $5.1 US to run Windows????

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

What do people think of the idea of a new section.

Important external news.

HP promises that if we post a story they don't like they leave it alone.

Maybe its not a good idea after all.

Re: HP sets oracle transaction record.

I have to say in all honesty, tnat HP does not look like it will be broadening it's UNIX market.

For years, we have asked for better desktops, more user friendly applications.

Sure, us techies like the number crunching goodies behind the scenes, but it makes no difference to the people who write the checks. They want CD players, Mpeg/MP3 players, some bells and whistles beyond the monotone beep.

My server line is now almost completely Sun Microsystems. TCO is less than 10% of HP on identical systems.

2x1.2GB Ultrasparc III, 2GB Ram, 128GB Disk, Server tools, cluster tools, monitoring, paging, etc... etc.. etc.. INCLUDING a 3 year softare support agreement for less than 25K US. I called HP and asked for a competative quote and talked to 4 people who never bothered to call back.

My desktops, while not performing as well as HP-UX are moving that way too. I can run a Sunblade with a built in PC for less money than an HP C3750, and I dont have to buy a separate PC.

I can not convince my customers that spending 2x the money for HP and getting less is better. Quite frankly, if not for 1 customer that demands HP irregardless I would have no customers currently running HP-UX.

So good job on the Itanium 4way and 64way tpc mark.

Now wake up and earn some customers back.
