HP-UX 11.00 workstation will not boot!

HP-UX 11.00 workstation will not boot!

I have an HP-UX workstation that will not boot.
When coming up, it gives the following errors:

INITSH: /sbin/rc: cannot execute

INIT: Command is respawning too quickly
Will try again in 5 minutes.
Check for possible errors.
id:cons "/usr/sbin/getty console console #system console"

INIT: Command is respawning too quickly
Will try again in 5 minutes.
Check for possible errors.
id:ems4 "/etc/opt/resmon/lbin/p_client"

I ran the Recovery Shell from the CORE OS/Install disk, and am unable to mount
the root disk on /ROOT. When I type the
suggested command (chroot_lvmdisk) and
accept the default hardware address, I
get the following errors:

ERROR: map_root_lv is not supported under this release of HP-UX
ERROR: Not init and not in test model
Cannot setup the chroot.

Any suggestions for getting this machine booting again? Thanks so much.

Can you boot the system into single user mode ?
(hpux -is). This will drop you to a shell bypassing getty.

It sounds to me like you have a connection problem from the serial cable to the console and thus garbage is being picked up by getty causing it to respawn. Either that or your /etc/gettydefs file is corrupt. Once youre in single user mode you can investigate further.

If the system disk can't be mounted under /ROOT I have no idea (disk could be corrupted).
If only the chroot does not work, maybe you can access the /ROOT/sbin/rc script and check it out and repair it.
