HP-UX 11i Boot Failure
It will however boot and install the OS from 11i (december 2000). No, this is not a media issue, I'm using a dvd300i drive and have been using it for a long time.
2nd problem I'm having is whenever doing an swinstall which requires kernel rebuilding, the subsequent boot fails just like the OS install attempt as mentioned above. Only code is CC01 (harmless)...This may only be occuring on NEWER patches, I'm not sure yet.

Re: HP-UX 11i Boot Failure
For your first question check this doc. could be your dvd/cd is effected.
http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/notices/Final-2_December.2003_media.issue.pdf
Could you give us an example of a patch or software.depot, and if possible could you add info from the /var/adm/sw/swinstall.log.
Kind regards,
Robert-Jan

Re: HP-UX 11i Boot Failure
The patch I tried to install was PHKL_29076 (Optical media). The patch installs fine and appears to rebuild the kernel fine, but as mentioned in the subsequent auto-reboot hangs.
I dont have a sw log file. I'm afraid I lack the patience, and cannot afford the down time so each time its happened, I immediatly perform a re-install of the december 2000 OS (without incident).

Re: HP-UX 11i Boot Failure
I can't find information related to your error, but since you are using an "old" CoreOS media, I would advice you to install the latest qualtypack for 11.i v1 (link is below)
