HP-UX 11i - network hangs after ca. 2 minutes from system is up

Hello,
After I reboot just installed HP-UX 11i, I can connect the host remotely but after about 2 minutes connection hangs.

I cannot ping the node and cannot ping any routable network from the node.

Pinging the host's IP locally from the console it's OK.

Before, I installed 11i I had 10.20 and there were no problems with network.

I had rebooted node a few times, and everytime I had connection OK aout 2 minutes from system was started.

BTW:
I don't use any NIS stuff and during statup it shows NIS services are being started (OK). I checked entries in /etc/rc.config.d files and NIS* are set to 0 so shouldn't be started. Why then it is shown OK instead of N/A for NIS services status during startup?

thx for any answer,
Chris

Can you still ping other nodes on the same local subnet as the HPUX host?

Re: HP-UX 11i - network hangs after ca. 2 minutes from system is up

1) Did you configure your network properly? Did you setup your network card properly? Check it from console and see what's the network card status with 'lanscan', 'ifconfig' and netstat commands.

2) Did you install all patches after the OS installation? If not, do it first.

3) Make sure your network connection and the settings are okay (speed, autoneg etc)

4) The NIS services are applicable to your system, but since you don't want to enable the services it will say 'OK'(OK doesn't mean that it started the subsystem( and not "N/A". (This what I think!). Since it's not starting on boot, I wouldn't worry about it much.

It is probably on eof the network setup type things mentioned above. However, it seems a bit like route or name resolution to me and as name resolution tends to do more strange things than routing so I would wonder about that. Are you using DHCP?

I would go through and check all the networking parameters again.

Re: HP-UX 11i - network hangs after ca. 2 minutes from system is up

I made that happen once.

I set two lan cards to the same network in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf

HP-UX networking will not work in 11.11(11i) under those circumstances.

Check the netconf file and comment out the second NIC card and see what happens after boot.

Re: HP-UX 11i - network hangs after ca. 2 minutes from system is up

Hi Chris,

A common problem when upgrading or using one image to load another system is a netconf file that had MAC addresses hardcoded into it.
When loading another system with the image you *know* the MAC will be different. But when upgrading you frequently have situations where the lan instances change on you & that can throw things off.
I always recommend to not hardcode the MACs into the netconf & personnally never do it myself.
But this could explain *why* it works for a while & then quits. The ARP entry finally propogates around & to someplace that causes routes to stop.

Rgds,
Jeff
