HP-UX 11i Virtual Test Environment

Does anyone know of a product like MicroSoft Virtual PC that can be used for a test environment for the HP-UX Operating System?
Thanks.

Andy,

HP offers VPARs or Virtual Partitions, which allows you to divide a recent model server into separate partitions, allowing one machine to server multiple purposes.

Is that anything like you had in mind?

Re: HP-UX 11i Virtual Test Environment

For HP-UX 11i version 1./2.0 PARISC versions - vPars (Virtual Partitions) is your only solution.

For HP-UX11i v 1.6/2.0 for Itanium/Integrity systems.. no vPar support yet I believe.

Take note that vPars implementation on HP-UX 11i as it is now needs to have DEDICATED bootdisks, storage and networking and granulrity is at the CPU level. So you can not virtually partition a single CPU system.

Re: HP-UX 11i Virtual Test Environment

Each vpar is going to need a CPU a network card and some storage to boot off of.

Its not available yet for 11i v2 and it only works on certain HP-9000 servers right now under 11i v1

You need to state your server model to know if vpars will work for you.

Re: HP-UX 11i Virtual Test Environment

You have all backed up what I had thought. I was hoping there was a solution that did not involve partitioning an existing installation. I am fairly certain that what I was looking for does not exist.

Re: HP-UX 11i Virtual Test Environment

With what's currently going on with HP-UX, I doubt if any VPC, vMware, MicroPartitio or Solaris Container kind of virtual paritioning will be availabe anytime soon for HP-UX environments. They've alread backed off the Tru64 integration so...

But as it is.. HP-UX still is and remains a very stable and rock solid operating environment.
