HP-UX 11i virtualization

HP-UX 11.0 is not supported inside VSE on 11i?
Here's my problem, I currently have HP-UX 11.0 installed on an HP-9000 d250 server, which only supports 32-bit. I need to install oracle 9.2.0 on this server. Oracle only supports 9.2.0 in 64-bit version. So, short of buying a new server with 64-bit capability,
I thought of possibly adding a VSE environment on another HP-UX server ( rp3410) that I already have in-house, and running the HP-UX 11.0 in that VSE.
It appears that this is not possible, and not supported,according to HP documentation. Wondered if anyone has installed 11.0 in a VSE on 11i or higher?

Not possible. VSE only runs on 64bit servers starting with 11.11 -- it will not load or run on 11.00. VSE is only useable on supported versions of HP-UX (11.00 is completely unsupported starting Jan 2007).

Your D250 is a great little server but Oracle 9 is way, way beyond it's capacity. Take a look at a used A500 or rp2400 series. Using your D250 for a heavy duty (and very expensive) database like Oracle is like putting a 2 ton trailer hitch on a mini-Cooper. Your D250 would be a good web server or a great centralized management server to track info and performance on other servers.

rumors had it that some things were possible with the very first beta-like vpar version, i.e. 'helping' it to run on workstations, but 11.00 is not possible, there's a whole bunch of kernel features (i.e. relocation, as the memory range won't start at 0x00000[...], but instead somewhere).

besides, 11.11 and beyond have a lot of desirable features to offer, including usually higher performance.

if you're on a ...extremely tight... budget You could look into replacing your D-Class' cpu board with one from a D320 or better; I've gotten myself a dual 64bit board off ebay for something like $15, but to be honest, the D-class found it's place on the pile of outdated stuff in my cellar, and the cpu board is filed away somewhere.

I would think You're better off investing $500 for two C3700's or one A500, as they're a few years newer You'll even have a somewhat better availability; i wouldn't expect the D-Class to keep running forever, it's bound to fail some day.

And of course, you'll get roughly 4 times the performance with just one current cpu, plus U2W scsi instead of F/W scsi, and also a FAR higher memory throughput.

At my company (ISV) we have a little C3600 to run develepment oracle databases, one 9i and one 10g.
I can't say the performance is stunning, but it gets the job done nicely. Right now it's got 1.5GB ram and we'll probably upgrade it to 3GB (2x1024 and 2x512MB for optimum bandwidth); after that it should handle it's workload easily. They come really cheap, even from HP certified resellers, so you can put it on support if required.

Still I'd recommend You get an A-class or something current like the rp3440 so You can out for 11v3.

Besides if the VSE is the Itanium Virtual Machine, that only runs on Integrity (aka Itanium) hardware, and so it wouldn't run on your rp3410 in the first place. And if you did have an Integrity/Itanium system, since 11.0 didn't run on Itanium, it couldn't be run as a guest OS anyway.

The suggestion to go to a newer system is probably goodness. If you think you will have interest in the virutal machine stuff, go with an Integrity system. Of the more recent stuff, the rx2660 <> might be the most interesting. As far as used systems, I've no idea how far back in the HW space the virutal machine stuff goes with its support. Regardless, you do _NOT_ want anything based on an Itanium 1 (aka Merced) processor - eg the rx4610, rx9610 and the i2000.

Ignoring the question of suporting the virtual machine stuff, the rx1620 might be interesting, older systems like the rx4640, rx1600, rx2600 or rx2620. There is also the rx5670.

The VSE environment includes a large number of various tools and software products, inckluding such items as Serviceguard, WLM, Vpars, Integrity Virtual Machines etc.

HP-UX 11.00 can certainly run some of these products, but as far as the overall VSE environment goes, HP-UX is NOT included, bearing in mind support ended 31st December 2006
