HP-UX 11iv2 guest running in HPVM 11iv3 host...

Hi colleagues,

We are planning move (not migrate) our current production environment running over a physical Integrity rx8620 with HP-UX 11.23 to a BL870c i2 server blade architecture.
Reading the last HP-UX 11i Support Matrix (March 1, 2011) I’ve noticed that HP-UX 11.23 is not supported by "Tukwila" chipset as base operating system, HP-UX 11iv3 is an architecture prerequisite.

At this point my question: Is possible install HPVM 11iv3 host with guest virtual machines on 11iv2? Is there an official document expressly provided this cross-versions support?

At 11iv2 we know that last December 2012 Quality Pack Depot is required on source (rx8620) to ensure a successful deployment on a virtual target ussing Ignite/UX. In this order of ideas I'll be grateful for any additional suggestions or considerations to keep in mind (e.g: host and guests HP-UX licensing, etc).

Thanks in advance.

HP-UX Integrity Virtual Machines supports both 11iv2 and 11iv3 HP-UX guests.
refer to any of the version 4.x Release Notes for supported Guests

Shalom,

Latest version of HPVM running on 11.31 host will run 1123 guests.

There is no such thing as the December 2012 QPK, do you mean 2011?

You may have issues with applications and system calls they make that are not compatible with AIRES empulator, but that is rare.

Melvyn, thank you very much by your reference, in fact the key document is:
HP Integrity Virtual Machines 4.3: Release Notes
11.4 HP-UX Guest Support (Page 35)
http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02752983/c02752983.pdf

Steven, December 2010, I meant! So I guess that you also refer to "Aries Emulator"? ;)

Maintaining the same question, and forgetting that I move a source machine in 11v2, I would resolve this doubt: Understanding that 11iv3 is a prerequisite for the model BL870c i2 (Tukwila chipset), and there is a kind of license available HP-UX 11iv3 VSE-OE (BOE, plus virtualization Additional components)
Could I initially earring i2 BL870c without any component uses virtualization, as a single physical partition?
If this possible, and if in the future I would like to virtualize environments on this machine (BL870c i2), I should first undo the existing single physical machine and convert it into a virtual machine in addition to the new ones, Yes/No? It welcomes any comments.

Rgds.

Hi Jose,

That's how the bl870c i2 ships - as one single partition. There is no such thing as npars on the bl870c i2 so it's not possible to break it up into multiple physical partitions. One single partition is the only option.

There is no "undo" of the partition to make this system an Integrity Virtual Machine host. Simply by installing and enabling the Integrity Virtual Machines product the system will become a VM host - still as a single two-blade partition. You can then begin creating virtual machines on the system.

Hope this helps,

Dave
