A couple of things:
a) Ensure that you have powered off all your devices and then brought them up.
b) Check visually to see if none of the diskdrives or other peripherals are having any problems.
c) Last, try changing the cable, though this is very rare, unless when the cable has really been mutilated.

I thought C440 was memory.

First of all try to reset console terminal settings to default by holding down Ctrl+D while cycling the terminal power. Then reboot the server

Re: HP-UX boot hangs on init C440

The "INIT C440" indicates the system could not initialize the console during boot up.
The following steps should resolve the problem:
1. Switch off console.
2. Whilst holding down the 'D' key power on the console, wait for about 15 sec and then release the D key. Press return to clear the
defaults configs used message.
3. The boot process should continue as normal.

This problem is caused when the console
path has been lost for some reason, possible shutdown was interrupted.

Re: HP-UX boot hangs on init C440

Make sure your console ins't locked. if it is do a control D and power off screen at the same time then power on the screen after releasing your control D. Then shut down your system. Power it back on and see it that doesn't take care of it.

Hope this helps

Re: HP-UX boot hangs on init C440

TIME OUT PEOPLE! C440 is *not* a hang. It is an indicator that all the hardware checks are done and the machine is ready to be booted.

The most common cause of getting stuck on C440 is that one has done a ctrl-B and has not done a CO afterword to return it to console mode. I GUARANTEE you that if you type in CO then the machine will give you your normal boot message.

While I am not a Unix guru, I AM a server swami. Any problems that occur before you boot the box will get answered really quickly if you post them to the server forum. I mean, those guys are pirahnas over there, fighting for the chance to answer questions.

Re: HP-UX boot hangs on init C440

Additional FYI. If you are using a dumb HP terminal for a console (700 series, 239x series, etc.) the terminal defaults will work just fine to communicate with your K box. While ctrl-D works fine, you can just select restore defaults and make sure that you have an asterisk in REMOTE MODE. Also, if you booted the box from the console, then you have no communication problems, just type in that CO to get it back in console mode.

Re: HP-UX boot hangs on init C440

In the knowledge base there are some documents explaining the error message:

PROBLEM:

While booting up the system, the system hangs with a message in the lower left-hand corner of the console that displays:

INIT C440

RESOLUTION:

The "INIT C440" indicates the system could not initialize the system console during bootup. This can happen if the terminal itself is in an incorrect mode or for other reasons.

To fix the problem:

1. Reset the system console by turning off the console.
2. Hold down the "D" key and continue to hold the key down while powering up the console.
3. Wait 10 - 15 seconds, and then release the key.
4. A message should appear in the lower left-hand part of the screen displaying:
'Default configs used, press any key to clear'

5. Press [Return] and the LED display on the computer should start to go through the self-tests.
