HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

I'm attempting to build a HP-UX 10.2 system off the CORE INSTALL cd-rom. The system boots to FIRMWARE just fine with no detected hardware faults. I tell it to boot off the IDE (CD-ROM) device and it proceeds to boot the INSTALL script. A couple of minutes into the load it has a System PANIC, flashes something about CCIO2(?) indicates that it cannot determine the offending program and resets the monitor. There is a lot of info on the screen but it happens so quickly I can't read the details. (I'm trying to round up a digital camera so I can take a picture).
I've looked through the manuals and no details on this problem are mentioned.
Any experts out there that can give me some pointers on where to head next with this?
Thanks
Curtis

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

You didn't mention what the hardware was, model etc. Did you look at the hardware compatibility list to see if your hardware is supported on HPUX 10.20?
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

_ Sorry about that - yes the hardware is a HP9000/735/C3600 system with a 552Mhz processor, 1Gig ram and 18Gig harddrive. I checked the install manual and it did indicate that this system was compatable with 10.2 software.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

What version of the 10.20 Install CD are you using? You must use the ACE 9912 (Dec. 99) for this machine. If it is any other version there will not be hardware support for the C3600.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

For me, panic during installation has nearly always been hardware configuration.

Try to do the most limited installation possible. (don't configure extra filesystems, nics etc)
Trying to capture a system image from the panic, ( booting to cd ) if filesystems have been created, ( crash directory) may help, but will likely be very generic at this point.

I'd go after a limited installtion ( internal disks only ) for starters.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

1) Check if the firmware is curent and compatible with the release of HP-UX.
2) Try it with different install media, just in case the cd is bad.
3) Answer a question.

Why are you trying to install an OS that has no support from HP? If its application compatibility, I understand but if this box can run 11.x it might be time to step back and plan a migration.

I was not aware HP used IDE CD-ROM's. That doesn't mean they don't but its important to have compatible hardware.

4)Disconnect the machine from any fiber connections an such as these sometimes cause panics during Ignite restores, which is based on the same installation software infrastructure as the install.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

Yes, HP does use IDE CD-ROM drives in its workstation (B, C, J) class machines. I'm sure it is a matter of cost.

I agree with Stephen in that you really should be looking at HP-UX 11.0 or better yet, 11.11 (aka 11i).

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

Thanks for the GREAT suggestions. I will look into these and report back.
As to why I'm using 10.2 and not upgrading to 11.x - it's a Navy thing. We're on 10.2 and that's that for this project. Frustrating for me also.

Re: HP-UX CD-ROM INSTALL - Panic

OK: I've found it. Many thanks to all but especially to Doug Mielke. We have the wrong version of HP-UX 10.2. We have ACE release 9906 and the matrix clearly indicates that 9906 is n/a for our C3600 system. I now need to find a HP-UX Core CD with ACE version 9912.
Thanks
