HP-UX Monitoring Tools

I am currently looking at UNIX monitoring tools. I would like the advice of more experienced administrators on possible options. I personally like Spotlight on UNIX from Quest software but I would like to know if there are any other good alternatives for monitoring our two HP-UX servers. Thanks to all in advance for their help.

Monitoring is kind of a general term. Are you interested in performance monitoring? In that case I would look at Glance/Measureware from HP. Are you interested in overall operations? In that case, I would look at OpenView ITO.

There are a lot of products out there and considerable overlap between them. Quite often the choice comes down to personal preference but I tend to stick with HP products. It makes it easier in support situations.

Big Brother (http://bb4.com/) is a good free alternative. One advantage is that it can monitor many OS and uses kind of plug-ins. See all features on website.

Hi Adrian,
There are a few monitoring tools available:
I would add BMC Patrol and sysload...

Depending the purpose I would advise you to have at least glance (for performance/analizing a system)

The rest depends on how much resource ($$$) you have and the needs

For basic/common tasks I find Bigbrother and MRTG suitable (And used to be free, I dont know now)

To see what is going on in your oracle instances Quest's TOAD is the tool
(Quest have Big brother now)

A lot of monitoring tools you write yourself. See the attached script. It collects performance data in the background for later analysis.
