No, it's not terribly complex. The standard recommendation from most of the experts around here is to do a cold install rather than an upgrade, but, considering your inexperience, you might want to stick with an upgrade. There is an "Installing and Updating" manual that will guide you.

Now, if it were me, I would skip 11.23 and go straight to 11.31 if at all possible. Since 11.23 and 11.11 both have the same end of support dates, there's little to be gained there. Just a thought.

One thing you need to make sure you check is that all of your firmware is at a level which will support HP-UX 11.23 or above. Things like GSP Firmware, PDC, BMC, MP. You can find links on HP's website as to the minimum firmware levels needed.

I would second the motion to go straight to 11iv3. Your system needs to be at least at firmware level PDC 45.44. The fastest way to get to 11iv3 (11.31) is to perform a fresh installation.

If that goes beyond your comfort zone, the 11iv2 (11.23) media will come with a booklet that explains the recommended update process.

As either solution has some risk, the first thing you should do is to learn about Ignite-UX recovery images. This will allow you to get back to where you are now if anything goes wrong. If spares are available, you might also install to a new disk (or load your recovery image to a new disk and update that). You can take bigger "risks" as long as you know you can start over.

There is documentation for either release on http://www.docs.hp.com, Ignite-UX too!
