HP-UX reboot for RP5700

I'm administer a HP-UX B.11.11 U 9000/800. I losing my root password and I can't reboot my server using command anymore. Is there any way I can possibly reboot without command line or force reboot (reset the button). I try to play safe here without doing any harm to my server. Thanks

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

If you have no root access at all you may consider to reset the server.
Log on to the MP and issue a "rs".

Consider this:
For the OS this is a real reset, not a clean shutdown.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

I'm a newbie, what is MP. What do you mean by issue rs. Did I'm suppose to press "on" button to reset. Thanks

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Telnet to the IP of remote console - this is MP (management processor). Login with administrative account (if not changed its Admin/Admin). From menus go to commands (CM) and RS (reset system). Good option is to use TC to keep crash dumps for analyze.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Sorry, is there any docs or step by step guide provided by HP. I'm not familiar with HP-UX anyway. Thanks

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

If I reset the server. Is it going to be reboot . How about Oracle configuration file and all the configuration file made to the server. Is it going back to default factory setting. Thanks

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Reseting server will reboot only. If there are no any failures in disk/file systems server should boot normally in configured runlevel.

If you planto reset it watch on the console for messages.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Thank god it just only rebooting. I'm afraid it is like a handphone reset (wipe off everything) silly me :). Is there any docs or instruction guide so I can follow. For better safe. Thanks

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

I guess the system in question is a rp54xx, so the "MP" is called GSP there - this is the service processor.

Logon to the GSP.
Type "rs" to reset the system.
Connect to the console

GSP> co

wait ...

press any kex when you see this

"Processor is booting from first available device.

To discontinue, press any key within 10 seconds."

At the menu type "bo pri"

Main Menu: Enter command or menu > bo pri

Main Menu: Enter command or menu > bo pri
Interact with IPL (Y, N, or Cancel)?>

type "y"

on the next prompt type "hpux -is"

ISL> hpux -is

this will boot into single user mode. Once you have a prompt, type "passwd" and input your new password.

# passwd

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

I have force shutdown of my HP RP5700.
Based on the instruction given, at

Main Menu: Enter command or menu >

I type bo pri like

Main Menu: Enter command or menu > bo pri

and i press enter. Unfortunately, there's nothing appeared afterward. It stuck at that prompt.

What shall i do. Did I'm suppose to wait or something bad happen to my HP-UX. How can i get into single user mode if I cannot pass that prompt

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Thanks for the answer. Did it solve the problem if I'm restart it. Is it common thing to happen. How can i restart without a root password.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Hi,
You can give shutdown privilege to other ordinary user so that user can restart the machine without root passwd or root login.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

I don't have a root password and no other user has a shutdown privilege except for a root. That is my problem now.

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Hi,
For entering in single user mode , no passwd is need. You can change root password without knowing old password using the command ├в passwd root ├в

Re: HP-UX reboot for RP5700

Hi Surizan Othman,
You can give shutdown privilege to any ordinary user . So that user account can reboot or shutdown the server without root login. Please check the file /etc/shutdown.allow.
