HP-UX user limit and re-install question

HI!

I have a K570 at a customer, running 11.00. I want to re-install the OS, going to 64-bit. It IS supported for the CPU's I have and firmware rev.

The current 32-bit 11.00 has a 16-user limit. Is this installed with a special codeword, or is it a default for a K570 when you install the OS?

Otherwise, what do I need to do to get the 16-user transferred to the new OS?

On another note, I have codewords in /var/adm/sw/.codewords but no idea what they are for. The part #'s in .codewords are B3920-13965 and B3920-13966 - can't find them anywhere.

Also, I need Mirror/UX, I assume I can just go to support with my serial # and get the codeword for that? Or is one of the above existing codewords for Mirror/UX? The customer has had support on the box since it was bought brand-new.

thanks!

By the way, I'm staying with 11.00, but going to 64-bit.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

At one point there was a free upgrade to an unlimited user license for HP-UX. I can't find it right now. You could check your application CDs.

The license you have was likely installed during, or after the base OS was installed.

The part numbers in the .codewords file are the numbers of the Application CDs that the codewords apply to. These numbers are printed on each CD. As long as you use the CD with the same part number as you have in the .codewords file, you will be able to see whatever software you are licensed for.

If you have a support contract on your machine you can get new codewords for software you are licensed for that apply to any application CD set you may have.

You can do this through the ITRC or by calling HP.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

And that's the key point:

The 16-user license was installed with a codeword and there isn't a default for a K570 to 16-user?

I wouldn't mind more info on the unlimited user thing.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

I can't remember what the default is for HP-UX 11.0. It **MIGHT** be 2, but I'm not sure.

Now the thing to remember is that HP-UX counts users rather strangely.

**ALL** network connections count as a single user. You could have 135 people telnet'ing to the box, but that only counts as 1 user.

EACH serial connection counts as a user. If you had 5 terminals attached serially, that would be 5 users. But I don't know many people that use serial terminals for much other than the system console.

In all likelihood you would be fine with the default user license for 11.0, whatever that is.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

Ah HA! I found it. Try this page for the free HP-UX 11.0 Unlimited User License.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?locBasepartNum=wk145enтМй=English

Just install this AFTER you install the OS. It does tweat the kernel so it will require reboot.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

That's the ticket - tried it on a 735 workstation w/11.00 and it worked, so that part of the problem is solved.

I wonder what those two things are listed in .codewords?

Again, they are B3920-13965 and B3920-13966

Is that the APPS CD part #, or the individual app?

thanks again guys, points all around...

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

As I said, those numbers are the App. CD part numbers.

If you have those particular CDs then you just copy that .codeword file, put it back in /var/adm/sw after you reinstall, and then pop those application CDs in and see what you have.

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

Phooey...

Since I'm planning on installing to an Autoraid or SC10/FC10, it might be a moot point about Mirror/UX...

But, I was hoping to use the internal drives and then mirror them to the Autoraid/FC10 (fully knowing what is involved with booting from one).

Re: HP-UX user limit and re-install question

IF you can find those CDs you could mount them on the current system, invoke interactive swinstall and se what aps are listed. If Mirror/UX shows up, then you are set.
