HP-UX versions/update survey

The VSE development team would like to understand the versions of HP-UX running in your production environment. Please answer the following questions only with regard to the PA-RISC HP-UX version 11iv1 (i.e. B.11.11) servers running in production mode.

1) What is the most common update release of HP-UX 11iv1 running in your environment? What percentage of your systems are at this release?

2) What is the oldest update release of HP-UX 11iv1 running in your environment?

3) What is the newest update release of HP-UX 11iv1 running in your environment?

4) In general, how often do you update your production servers from one update release to the next?

Hi Brad,

1) Version june 2005 about 85 %

2) Version may 2005 about 5 %

3) Version december 2005 10 %

4) twice a year

1) 11.11 11i v1 September 2005 quarterly is our ideal release.
2) We have servers that are as far back as 2002 Core OS with a quarterly from Deecember 2003.
3) 11.11 v2 September 2005 is newest running release.
4) That varies. If the user won't give us downtime it doesn't get updated. When a user requirement forces them to ask for an upgrade we go to what we consider the latest stable Core OS.

We don't update releases, only apply conservative patch sets (customized by HP).

We sometimes upgrade to a new OS level (IE 11.0 to 11.iv1 to 11iv2). The other way we upgrade is when we replace servers - then we use what is the current release.

4) We very rarely update the OS (when I have to reinstall is the only time I have this opportunity, not very often...)

100% of our 11i Systems are based on Dec '03 OEURs due to our use of a Golden Image.

4. Nil.. we simply apply the periodic SupportPlus Patches and CPM Bundles.

We also use golden images to update systems. We do not run the update to upgrade everything (maybe we should once in a while...) We upgrade apps and patch the system as needed/scheduled. Patches are applied twice a year, apps as needed. (For example, ssh is being updated this week. apache was upgraded a month and a half ago.)

not more than once a year since long downtime slots are a big issue

any chance you could develop a tool which would allow us to :
1 3 way mirror the os ,
2 split the 3rd copy off
3 mount and run update against this 3rd copy
4 have 15 mins down and boot from the new updated copy
5 restablish 2 way mirror
