Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
I might have built a kernel once in my life, long ago, but perhaps
not, so I know nothing. But...
> (Bundled) cc: "/usr/conf/space.h.d/gvid_space.h", line 48: error 1588: "GVID_NO_CLAIM_DEV" undefined.
Apparently, if you're using "/usr/conf/space.h.d/gvid_space.h", then
GVID_NO_CLAIM_DEV should be defined. My guess (but what do I know?) is
that that C macro gets defined (somehow) from the value of the kernel
tunable "gvid_no_claim_dev". Around here ("hp workstation c7000"):
dy# uname -a
HP-UX dy B.11.11 U 9000/785 2012616114 unlimited-user license
and SAM > Kernel Configuration > Configurable Parameters says that
"gvid_no_claim_dev" is defined (Current Value = Pending Value = 0), and
it's Static.
A quick Web search suggests that it's a PCI Device-ID+Vendor-ID for a
graphics card which you want to be ignored. If you don't have that
parameter defined, then I might try to find away to add it.
"/usr/conf/master.d/gvid" seems to be related.
My "/stand/build/space.h" is mostly a bunch of "#include" directives
(including "#include "/usr/conf/space.h.d/gvid_space.h"), and an array
declaration which includes the items "vxdmp_tunables" and
"vxvm_tunables". Presumably, those should be defined someplace, too.
Perhaps:
/usr/conf/space.h.d/vxdmp_space.h
/usr/conf/space.h.d/vxvm_space.h
I certainly don't know enough about how UP-UX builds its kernel, but
perhaps one of us (you) can do more reading, and find out how that C
macro is supposed to get defined. My guess is that you have some
corrupt files.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Dear Steven, how are you?.
Thank you so much for your time and suggestion.
I need to compile the Kernel because I am trying to restore a back-up from a tape. The problem is that the process is incomplete, so I have to ignore errors and continue. Finally I have the UX 11.11 able to boot from hard disk but many process don't work because there are not full files in theirs folders.
I try to reinstall again all the filesets, and is that moment when kernel has to be complied.
Yesterday night I were investigating a little bit more and I discovered that some "*.h" files copied from the CD-rom are corrupted, and when compiler try to use it, compilations fails.
Now I am going to restore again the tape back-up and I will go to the origin. I will take a copy of the *.h files before to install any fileset. I don't know the reason, but some of these files are corrupted from CD-rom....
I will post more news if I can get more info.
Thank you so much in advance.
Luis.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Hello LuisFSalas,
The basic issue seems to be incomplete restoration from tape , resulted in missing files .
You may see if you have another good backup , try restore the OS from the same .

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Hello georgek_1,
Thank you so much for your reply. It's true, the backup from tape tails and the restored O.S. is not complete. I am trying to re-install all the lost packages but my problem is that installation fails.
I have discovered that the problem is that all the *.h files from CD-rom of HP UX11.11 are codified and I cannot access to the correct *.h files. This is the reason why I cannot compile the kernel during installation, because *.h files cannot be accessed correctly.
I suppose that it is due to license and/or user code from the CD-rom that I am using.
Have anybody some CD-ROM 'iso" with the correct files? or some valid user to access to the CD-rom?.
Thank you so much in advance.

Your analysis is interesting, but it might be more helpful if you
revealed what you did, and what happened when you did it, rather than
what you think it all means.
> [...] all the *.h files from CD-rom of HP UX11.11 are codified and I
> cannot access to the correct *.h files. [...]
"cannot" is not a useful problem description. It does not say what
you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations. Copy+paste is your friend.
> I suppose that it is due to license and/or user code from the CD-rom
> that I am using.
I can't see the label on your (unspecified) "the CD-rom". I've
installed HP-UX from CD-ROMs on a few systems (long ago), and I don't
recall needing any codeword for the base OS.
If I had a problem with the HP-UX files on a backup tape (of some
unspecified type or other), then I might try to install HP-UX from the
CD-ROM(s), perhaps onto a different disk.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Hello Steven, how are you?.
Thank you so much for your reply and interest in this problem.
I apologice too much that my information was not so specific. I am going to collect more technical and specific info and I will post here again. Anyway, as I have wroten in other post, I replaced a lot of hardware of this server because they were broken, so I have new motherboard, new RAM, new hard disk and new SCSI controller. My back-up tape has errors and during the process I had to choose between 1) stop process 2) continue ignoring errors 3) go to shell.
I choosed 2) option and after to finish the process I got this:

If you edit the file "/usr/conf/space.h.d/gvid_space.h", you can see that file is not text file. Instead of this, it look a binary file with non understanding characters. This is the real problem, compiler can not compile it because there is nothing like code lines in these files during compilation.
I have tryed to edit several *.h files from CD-ROM but all the *.h files look to be "codified" or corrupted. Perhaps I need some user code to access to these files.
I will post the message that I have when I try to access to these CD-ROM.
Thank you again.
Luis.

That's still my advice. Whatever you've done up to now, the compiler
is complaining about various header files under "/usr/conf/" and
"/stand/build/". I'd expect a new installation of HP-UX onto a virgin
disk to give you good versions of such files.
If you can install HP-UX onto a virgin disk, then you can decide
whether you want to copy files from that new disk onto your old/corrupt
disk, or try to configure the new/working disk with all the other
software from your old/corrupt disk.
> [...] I am trying to re-install all the lost packages [...]
I don't know how to do that. I believe that I know how to install
HP-UX on a virgin disk, and I'd expect that to extract and install all
the necessary files from the HP-UX installation CD-ROMs.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Dear Steven,
Thank you so much once again for your interest and collaboration. I am back again into this task and now I can access to the server again.
The problem that I have is that all my CD-ROM have been downloaded from internet, so they are not bootable. This is the reason why I cannot do a new clean installation.
Using the tape I could generate a new HD bootable with HP UX 11.11 but with many files lost. It is possible to reinstall again all the filesets you need with the command:
#swinstall -s /cdrom
When I do it, I have this screen:

This is the reason why I cannot re-install O.S. I cannot access to the "*.h" files inside of CD-rom.
The CD-ROM label has this text: "software on this disk is secured and requires a codeword".
I am afraid that I have to introduce some "codeword" in order to access to full information.
Does someone know a valid codeword for these CD-rom's?.
Thank you so much in advance.

I doubt it.
First, "internet" is a very big place. What, more precisely, did you
download, and what are you doing with whatever you downloaded? If you
got CD-ROM images (often referred to as ".iso" files), did you make
actual CD-R discs from them? I don't see why "downloaded from internet"
would imply "not bootable".

What you've been doing might not work, but I'd still expect a normal
installation to work. It always did for me. I'd expect the HP-UX
installer to be able to extract what it needs from the installation
CD-ROMs, even if you can't.
> The CD-ROM label has this text: "software on this disk is secured and

I'm sure that that's true for some of the software (like, say,
compilers); I'm less sure that it's true for the base OS. As I said,
I don't recall needing any codeword to install the base OS.
> Does someone know a valid codeword for these CD-rom's?.
With my weak psychic powers, I know nothing about your (unspecified)
"these CD-rom's". Also, as I understand it, the codewords were
product-specific. (And I don't recall needing any codeword to install
the base OS.)

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Hello Steven again, and thank you for your reply.
I downloaded CD-ROMS from here:
https://archive.org/details/hp-ux11i11.0
You can see labels and also the contents. They are "ISO" files and I used Alcohol software do CD-ROMs.
I am trying to install from them, but I have error messages because CD-ROM is not bootable. Perhaps I made a bad copy from ISO?... This is the message with CD-ROM inserted and I try to boot from CD.:

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Putting the legality of those images on that site aside, none of the ISO Images you downloaded are bootable disks. Those are all just applications or add-on software.
The HP-UX Installation disks are what you would need in order to boot and install the OS.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
Thank you so much Patrick for your reply.
I suspect that, and I am downloading other CD's from here:
https://fsck.technology/software/HP/HP-UX%20Install%20Media/
Anyway, I am still not sure that ISO's can be bootable.
Let's see.....
Thank you again.
Luis.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
An ISO image can create a bootable DVD. That is how HPE distributes HP-UX now.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel
I don't know what all you have downloaded. If you have downloaded the DVD set that is the HP-UX installation set, then once you create DVDs from the ISOs, you should be able to boot from DVD 1.
As far as your backup goes, I don't know that there is much you can do. It appears that the tape is corrupted.

If the "cat" command produces garbage, then there is one thing you may try to do. It could be that the file is "tar"-ed or "gzip"-ed. So check if the "file" command is able to determine the file-type. (It reads the header)
file ./netscapedirsvr6/nds-nsperl/var/opt/netscape/servers/lib/nsperl5.005_03/lib/pa-risc2.0-thread/core/xsub.h
If the file command is not able to report the type, then you definetelly have a corrupted DVD/CD ROM.
You can also simply try to "untar" or "ungzip" it.
cat ./netscapedirsvr6/nds-nsperl/var/opt/netscape/servers/lib/nsperl5.005_03/lib/pa-risc2.0-thread/core/xsub.h | gunzip > /tmp/my_xsub.h
Hope that helps.

Re: HP UX11.11 cannot compile kernel

A CD-R (or DVD-R) made from a bootable CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) image
("ISO") file should be bootable. I do it all the time, on various
operating systems.

Except that for 11.11, it's a set of CD-ROMs, not DVDs.

Note the (sub-DVD) sizes of the files here:
https://fsck.technology/software/HP/HP-UX%20Install%20Media/HP-UX%2011iv1%20%282005-09%29/
Posting a long transcript without an explanation of what you're doing
to get it is not as helpful as it could be.
> [...] It appears that the tape is corrupted.
Yup.
Of course, "ISO" is a standards organization (https://www.iso.org);
"ISO 9660" is a particular ISO standard which "Specifies the volume and
file structure of compact read-only optical disks (CD-ROM) [...]". (And
"COVID" is a lame abbreviation of "COVID-19", as in COrona Virus ID-19
(2019 being the year in which it was identified). "ID" without the
"-19" is rather pointless.)
