Solution
I tried to get the APC software to work on 10.20 for several weeks...no success. Although the Java was created to provide a way to shutdown the system in case the battery runs out, nothing seemed to work with this obsolete and unsupported OS. So there were only two methods available to shutdown the system: serial port queries or adding the LAN card and querying the webserver or using SNMP to watch for the shutdown conditions.
For the serial port, the expect program would probably work to talk to the APC unit. But I chose the SNMP route although did not complete the project. You'll need to do some programming to get this working.
