hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Hi,
I am trying to install HPUX 11.0 in a rp2405 server, but when i boot from dvdrom and show me the install options, only i can select between this two 64 bits choices:

64-Bit CDE HP-UX Environment
64-Bit Minimal HP-UX (English Only)

I can install it to 64 bits, but i need install it to 32 bits, why the setup show me only two options when i select a system environment??

Please help
Thanks

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

The reason is beacuse this model
rp24xx supports only 64bit kernel, so you can load only 64bit OS not 32 bit.

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

You can do the 64 bit install and still compile /install and use MOST 32 bit application software. You need to check with your vendor.

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Hi,

all recent HP server models(including all rpxxxx) support only the 64 bits OS.
you can install the 64 bit OS and can run any 32 bit applications.

only the old (D-class, K-class) models support 32 bit OS

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Hi David,

As mentioned, 32-bit oracle will work just fine with 64bit OS. In fact all of our systems are with 64bit OSes.

You do not need to make any changes to the kernel. However, there are some kernel parameters that you will find for both 64bit and 32bit processes. For ex., maxdsiz for 32bit processes and maxdsiz_64bit for 64bit processes. So if you are asked to change the maxdsiz value, you better change both of them (unless maxdsiz_64bit is higher than required) as in future if you upgrade your oracle to 64bit, it will still be supported. You can see these available parameters either with kmtune or in SAM.

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Just a note about Oracle 7 (I assume 7.3.4) and the very latest versin of HP-UX: you are headed for a LOT of troubles. Oracle 7 is not supported at all, on any version of HP-UX, and even if you manage to get it installed, you'll likely see issues with performance, kernel parameters, even some strange quirks related to the many years of differences that have taken place since Oracle 7 was designed and then obsoleted and the new rp servers. This is like trying to run an old DOS version of PONG on WindowsXP and expecting it to work. if you expect reliable performance from Oracle, upgrade your Oracle to 8i or 9i.

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Just a minor clarification, Oracle 7.x *was* supported at one time on HP-UX 10.x, but was never supported on HP-UX 11.x at any bit-width.
And of course *both* Oracle 7.x & HP-UX 10.x are now entirely unsupported.
So I too would *highly* recommend that if you're moving up to HP-UX 11.x, you also upgrade Oracle to at least 8i & apply the 8.1.7.4 patch.

My 2 cents,

Re: hpux 11.0 - 32bits Install problem

Adding to Jeff,

Oracle 8.1.7 has 23 months of support left. If you are doing a migration, skip it. 9.2.0 is stable and the conversion though painful is not a near death experience.
