HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi everyone,

I am trying to install HPUX 11.11 on an HPUX C3600 workstation by booting from a CD. I am using an LG CDROM. I have tried the following:

1. "sea" command gives me the list of the potential boot devices as follows:

P0 IDE CDROM
P1 FWSCSI.6.0 QUANTUM ATLAS10K-9LVD
P2 FWSCSI.5.0 QUANTUM ATLAS10K-18LVD

2. "boot p0"
3. Interact with IPL - n

Booting ...
Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 0

HARD Booted.
ISL Revision A.00.43 April 12, 2000
ISL booting hpux (;0):INSTALL

Boot
: disk(10/0/14/0.0.0.0.0.0.0;0):WINSTALL
11763712 + 1970264 + 2628048 start 0x200ae8

That's how far the installation seems to go. It just stalls and does nothing ....

What could the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

How long has it stalled? It can take a significant amount of time at this step - while nothing apparently is happening.

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Pete,

I waited for more than an hour. There was no sign of any activity at all, but all the same I think an hour is just way too much.

Thanks,

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Things to check:

Is the C3600 supported?

Does it meet the required hardware requirements (ram, disk, firmware, etc...).

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi RAC, Hi Geoff,

RAC, I can't really say for sure whether my CDROM is the problem or not. I know for sure that my CD is OK since I have used the same CD on another box (C240 Workstation) and it worked. I am using an IDE CDROM from LG. Any other hints ?

Geoff, C3600 is supported according to my understanding. I could also install HP-UX 11.11 on an older workstation (C240).

Any other hints ?

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Geoff,

I have the following hardware, ram specifications:

1. 2 GB RAM
2. 27 GB disk (2 disks 9GB and 18GB)

SO I think this looks good.

Any other hints?

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Is workstation supported?? As it is using WINSTALL it is only for 64 bit OS.

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Just a silly question - are you installing HPUX 11iv2? if so - thats a DVD....

Is there an OS on the box already - if yes - then boot it, then mount the cd manually...just to see if it works...

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi RAC,

According to the table on the URL you sent, it shows that 11i is supported for C3600 so that looks good.

Any other comments, hints etc ?

Thanks

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Geoff,

The OS verion I am using is 11iv1 and not 11iv2. I do not have any OS installed at the moment. It's a fresh installation.

Any other hints ?

Thanks

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Okay - how about firmware - what is the firmware release of your C3600?

You need to be @ 2.9 or higher..

It should be displayed at the beginning of the boot process...

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Well - I'm out of options - do you have a maintenance contract? If yes - then I wolud call HP....for it should give you a menu 2 to 5 minutes after displaying "WINSTALL"...

Unless it's your display/Term settings?

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for that Geoff. I think I will have to resort to HP.

Thanks anyway

You wrote:

That is most likely the problem. CDROMs support tow sector sizes, 512 and 2048 bytes and all of them can be changed from the SCSI bus. However, until there is a driver installed and HP-UX is running, the CDROM must be set to 512 in order to boot. This is a requirement of the CPU hardware and cannot be changed so the CDROM drive must be restrapped. Unfortunately, not many CDROM drives have a strap for this. Toshiba drives (which were rebranded for HP) have the default set to 512) and most older Plextor drives have a 512 default and should work OK. Booting is very different from the running kernel. All you have are the CPU ROMs to talk to the hardware.

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the hint. What do you think I need to do to cirmumvent that problem? Should I try to get a different CDROM?

Thanks for the clarification in advance

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

There will be a jumper on the CDROM drive. If there isn't then it can't be used to boot HP-UX. Virtually any drive can be used with HP-UX but bootup is totally different and extremely limited. I have never see a CDROM drive that advertises on the box whether it has a sector size jumper. Try looking at the manufacturer's website to see if there are details. Otherwise, look for an old Toshiba 2x thru 12x drive (I don't know if the faster ones have a selector). Toshiba and Plextor seem to be the only ones that default to 512 whoch is needed by the processor ROMs.

Re: HPUX 11.11 installation problems using CDROM

Hi Bill,

Thanks for that. I will check whether I can set the jumper on my CDROM. If not I think I will resort to another CDROM that supports the default 512 sector size.

I will let you know how this goes

Thanks
