HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

Hello All

I'm trying to install HPUX 11i v1.6 on HP i2000 Workstation.

When I select local media install I get an error saying:

"Cannot switch to local media source - it is not a complete  Ignite-UX Source. You will need to use an Ignite-UX server".

I really don't want to use Ignite-UX server because I do not have another HPUX machine handy.

Is there any way to force local media install?

Thanks!

Antoni

   "trying" _how_, exactly?

"trying" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  As usual, showing actual actions (commands) with their actual
results (error messages, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.  Copy+paste is your friend.

"install" from _what_, exactly?  What do the labels on your "local
media" (CDs? DVDs?) say?  I've never seen a version 1.6 installation
kit, so I know nothing, but my version 2 kit (11.23, "June 2007")
comprises two DVDs labeled:
      HP-UX 11i Version 2
      Foundation Operating Environment

   It's similar for version 3 (11.31, "February 2007").  (My Version 1
kit (11.11, "December 2006") comprises five CDs, similarly labeled.)

> Is there any way to force local media install?

Use the right local media?  It's been years since I did an actual
installation, but I never had any such problem.

> [...] i2000 Workstation.

Your junk is older than my junk (zx2000, rx2600), but I'd expect an
HP-UX installation to be very similar, assuming that your software kit
supports your hardware.  (I run v3/11.31 on mine.)

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

I boot from HP-UX 11i v1.6 (B.11.22) Install DVD.

I select Install HP-UX.

From User Interface and Media Options screen I select Media Only Installation under Source Location Options.

This is where I get this error: "Cannot switch to local media source - it is not complete Ignite-UX source. You will need to use an Ignite-UX server.".

The HP-UX 11i Version 1.6 Installation and Configuration Guide says "Media only installation" is correct fro installing from a DVD. So I'm thinking that perhaps I have incorrect media?

Thanks.

If you say so.  I can't see it.  On the right side, my v1 CDs say:

      Core OS
      Install and Recovery
      Version B.11.11

      December 2006
      CD N of 5      [N = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

   My v2 DVDs say only:

      June 2007
      DVD N of 2      [N = 1, 2]

   My v3 OS DVDs say:

      Core OS
      Install and Recovery
      Version B.11.31

      February 2007
      DVD N of 2      [N = 1, 2]

There are also two DVDs labeled:

      HP-UX 11i Version 3
      Application Software
HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers

      N of 2 February 2007      [N = 1, 2]

and one DVD labeled:

      HP-UX 11i Version 3
      HP Instant Information
      English

      February 2007

I doubt that I ever tried to use anything other than the "Foundation
Operating Environment" discs.

As I wrote, I've never had a problem with the "Foundation Operating
Environment" discs.  I'd expect problems of some kind if I tried to use
the "Application Software" discs.

> [...] So I'm thinking that perhaps I have incorrect media?

That'd be my guess, but I'm still not sure of exactly what "Install
DVD" means to you.  I also don't know whether your software kit
supports your hardware.

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

Okay I recorded the screen during boot. A split second before Ignite-UX UI takes over there is an error:

source read failed: invalid argument (errno = 22)

default (boot) source does not appear to be valid (or complete) install source, switching to network

so that explains a little bit

I'm not getting this error from v1.5, so perhaps I have corrupted media somehow

Does anyone have backup 11i v1.6 media by any chance?

Thanks!

Hmmm.  I know nothing, but EINVAL (22, "invalid argument") sounds to
me worse than a damaged disc.  What's the DVD hardware involved?  USB or
IDE or what kind or connection?

> I'm not getting this error from v1.5, [...]

Which kit is newer?  Knowing nothing, I can imagine that it's
possible that the v1.6 kit includes some old/lame element which lacks
support for, say, a USB-connected DVD drive.  (But what do I know?)  At
least that would seem to exonerate your EFI firmware.

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

Hello Antoni,

The message you have seems to be for the media you have , since you are not getting the error for v1.5 media.
Usually the message comes when the server was booted from DVD (Original/bootable DVD , manually created) and selected tape for recovery .
Are you using an Original DVD which comes with server or a bootable dvd which was created manually  ?

You may also try to read the media (CD/DVD) on another known good drive and see if it is able to read the contents  .

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

@georgek_1

Thanks for your answer. I no longer have the original media. I restored it from a backup I took years ago. I basically have .iso files. It is possible that the ISO files got corrupted during two decades.

Is there a way that one could purchase media kit from HP or a reseller for this?

Thanks!

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

Hello Antoni,

There are less chance for iso file corruption when compared physical media .

Have you ever used this iso files for installing the server , since it was mentioed that you used a backup to restore .

There would be less chance to get/download the media from HPE since HPE is no longer providing OLD HP-UX media for downloading , such as 11.11/11.23 or even 11.31 prior to May 2017 .

Re: HPUX 11i v1.6 on Itanium Local Media Install?

OK so turns out this was a DVD-ROM drive. HP-UX 11i v1.5 is on a CD while v1.6 is on a DVD. My i2000 does have a DVD drive and it seems to work fine for EFI boot and other OSes. However HPUX kernel somehow can't read from it. Replacing with another drive solved the issue.
