HPUX OS 11.11 Installation

Is there any differences between cold installing the Core OS Operating Env from say the December 2002 vs. the June of 2003 release. Both are 11i Version 1 operating system.

Both install: HPUXBaseXX and HPUXBaseAux
(XX 32 or 64 dependent on hardware)

The main difference between the two install CDs is hardware support. The June 2003 release may support some new hardware that the Dec. 2002 release won't.

The other difference would probably be the version of included software that would be installed, like diagnostics, Ignite/UX, etc. along with the OS. There may also be some newer patches that would be installed.

If you did happen to use the Dec. 2002 version, then you can always come up to date by installing the latest version of all the applications.

It may be worth it for you to have a broswe through the release notes for the 2 versions to see what the differences are.

Hi,

There is no difference in the core OS as detailed above. The only difference is that the newer release will have updated hardware patches and Quality patches. And they can be always updated with the latest support Plus CD. So even if you install the core OS from older version but install the latest Support Plus CD, your system is upto date.

As you note they are the exact same Operating System.

The June 2003 release just means a lot less patching for you to get your system to a stable state.

If I were doing a new system, I'd probably go with the June release. I just did a system two months ago with the December 2002 release and it came out fine, though I had to do a major patch upgrade to get SD-UX past some performance problems.

Whether the install goes 32 or 64 depends on the hardware. If the hardware supports both, you'll get a choice. Most modern hardware is 64 bit only.

Unless you are installing 11.11 on an old box (at least 3-4 years old) always use the latest version. As mentioned, newer hardware can require changes in the kernel, the bootcode and the drivers. Using old media on new hardware installs is always a problem.

Note also that after the install, you need to add 3 additional packages: the HWE depot of patches, the QPK depot of patches and the DIAGNOSTICS packge. These are all part o your latest Support Plus CDROM. Lacking that, you can download the 3 packages from http://www.software.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/
