HPUX Software Distribution Media

I recently bought a C180 which came loaded with
HP-UX 11. Is it fair to assume that I legally have a license because I have the hardware (It says a two user license, which is different than the L1000/L2000 software licenses we have)

If so can someone tell me where I can get a copy of the media on CD to be able to rebuild the system. I want to create a vg00 volume group and need the practice anyway.

Re: HPUX Software Distribution Media

When you bought the C180 did you buy it through a reseller? If so, did you buy HP hardware and/or software support? The key here is the software support contract. Without one of those, or possibly a warranty, you are pretty much out of luck I think. The software support entitles you to receive the OS media, in this case I think you should be able to get 10.20, 11.0, or 11i (11.11). If did buy from a 3rds party reseller, but didn't get support options, then you might be able to go back to the reseller.

If you bought the machine from an individual, like through E-bay, then you are probably out of luck.

If you want a hardware/software support contract then you would need to call HP. It should be fairly reasonable for a C180, I think.

Re: HPUX Software Distribution Media

Thanks Patrick,

I guess I was wondering more along the lines of "Am I able to purchase a CD with just the software and without a support contract" This machine was bought with intent of only using for attaining HP Admin certifications. It would never be in production of any kind. When I am done with the certs it will replace an aging p180 Linux box. Once again, it would make me nervous using it as a file server for my wifes quicken account without the promise of 100% recover ability (I guess that is a sort of production system after all).

Along the same lines, I have seen eBay offering to sell the original media disks. Is this legal and If so are there different media for differents 9000s?

Meanwhile I will look up support contracts

Re: HPUX Software Distribution Media

For 11.x, the media is all the same. Any Core/OS CD will work. HP will sell you a set of media (Core/OS, Application, SupportPlus, InstantInfo) for $400+. You'll learn HP-UX is more stable than Windows if you make regular backups and test them. For a C180, all you need is "/opt/ignite/bin/make_recovery -ACvi". Check the backup logs and test the tape with tar regularly. Do a reload from the make_recovery at least once so you know how it works. CIFS/Samba is popular so it would be good to learn how to set it up. A C180 is a good choice for home use, too.

The cert. won't get you far without experience. Completing a 4yr technical degree with internships and getting hired by an established company who will pay for the training and give you production experience is a more reliable option. Lots of super people in the field do fine without a degree but people new to the field will find it nearly impossible to get very far without one.

Re: HPUX Software Distribution Media

Paul,

I wont be one the soapbox for long.

What about the fact that I am new to HP would give you the impression that I don't have a Degree or Experience? I have been working with Solaris since 87, After finishing my Second Masters in CS (This was after I realized how usless a Masters in Physics actually was)

As for the Certifications. If someone offers to foot the bill for you to go to the classes to get all five certs, you probably wouldn't turn them down. Experience, well I only have 3 L1000s, a couple of L2000s and an N Class to administer, not to mention my toy (C180). Not the biggest environment but they keep plenty busy - NNTR.

Re: HPUX Software Distribution Media

Sounds like you have what you need. The OS media is the same for C180 as for L & N. There's no license fee and 11.11 says it's for "unlimited" users. As I mentioned, HP sells the media kit without a support contract for about $400.
