If you see something like a vmunix.prev, try
HPUX> boot /backup/vmunix.prev
or
HPUX> boot /backup/vmunix.prev -is
Hope this helps!

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue
Now have a look what happens to your system first:
# mount -a
# ll /var/adm/syslog
# cat //var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
Anything kernel related?
Now try to boot up:
# init 3
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Solution# cp -p /stand/backup/vmunix /stand
This will overwrite the old, but it is useless anyway.
Try to boot now.
If everthing is fine, consider to bring a backup strategy in place!
If you have an ignite server, use this.
If not, consider to set up one.
Alternative:
get 2 new drives.
mirror the existing drive to one of them (this you should do anyway!).
Use the second new disk to create a cold-standby copy (using drd).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue
/.sh_history
Check it, if there was any kernel related command performed in the past.
Check also
# more /etc/shutdownlog
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
