If you see something like a vmunix.prev, try

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

How about boot /backup/vmunix

That is around the date HP would have put this server together.

I had some trouble while posting the reply - so the answers are "crossed".

Yes, try this one.

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

That worked. Now what?

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

Very well!

Now have a look what happens to your system first:

# mount -a
# ll /var/adm/syslog
# cat //var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

Anything kernel related?

Now try to boot up:

# init 3

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Solution

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

Now copy (not move!) the backup kernel

# cp -p /stand/backup/vmunix /stand

This will overwrite the old, but it is useless anyway.

Try to boot now.

If everthing is fine, consider to bring a backup strategy in place!

If you have an ignite server, use this.

If not, consider to set up one.

Alternative:

get 2 new drives.

mirror the existing drive to one of them (this you should do anyway!).

Use the second new disk to create a cold-standby copy (using drd).

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

Is this an error, or did the copy work?

# cp -p /stand/backup/vmunix /stand
cp: /stand/backup/vmunix and /stand/vmunix are identical

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

check with

# ls -l /stand

# ls -l /stand/backup

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

Another thought - still curious about the reason. Do you have a file

/.sh_history

Check it, if there was any kernel related command performed in the past.

Check also

# more /etc/shutdownlog

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPUX V3 Boot Issue

Doesn't appear to be a history file.
