Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

hi

when u see the following:

* Configuring RAM filesystems...
* Scanning system for IO devices...
* Boot device is:
WARNING: Could not find Q_BOOT device. Cannot determine what the boot device
was.
WARNING: Could not find source device in ioscan output. You must select from
the list of devices below to use for the source device:
index HW-path Class description
0) 120 processor Processor
1) 121 processor Processor
2) 0/0/1/0 ext_bus SCSI_Ultra320
3) 0/0/1/0.0x0.0x0 disk HP_Virtual_LvDisk
4) 0/0/1/0.0x1.0x0 disk HP_Virtual_LvDisk
5) 0/0/2/0 lan HP_IGSSN_PCI_1000Base-T_Adapter
6) 0/0/4/0 lan HP_IGSSN_PCI_1000Base-T_Adapter
7) 0/0/5/0 lan HP_PCI/PCI-X_1000Base-T

Enter the index corresponding to the device to use
as the installation source, 'r' to rescan, or 'q' to reboot: 3
You selected: 0/0/1/0.0x0.0x0 disk HP_Virtual_LvDisk
Is this correct? ([y]/n):

please when the system is asking for the boot device that it cannot find , see by tring ti do a rescan ... or give the option 2 ... that is ur DVD rom ... instead of giving 3 that is basically ur Empty harddisk of the VM.

if that does not work ... u can see by setting the DVDROM assigned to the VM as a normal SCSI dev, not as a AVIO,STOR DEV, try deassigning and reassigning to the VM, then try install the OS.

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Hi,

Another thought is that upgarde the Firmware of the Integrity server to the latest one.

Always try to use the most updated HWEnablement Bundle in the OS along with the latest Patch Bundles, this increases the feature supportability of the HW Platform as well as for the OS.

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Bonjour Pnaidu,

Clearly "avio_stor" is not supported for installing from CD-ROM :

==> avio_stor_dvd(0,0).0 = disk(/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0)

Ignite doesn't show the CDROM in the list of possible boot devices.

Change avio_stor to scsi for the virtual CDROM, restart the VM, restart installation : everything should goes better.

Yep, cdrom/dvd with AVIO won't work, change it to dvd.

Windows?, no thanks

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Eric,

If I select all SCSI devices then devices are not visible on the INSTALL screen (weird)...
Linux Guest didn't complaint anything...and I thought life is easier in HPVM..
Is it a good time to patch my system?

Thanks, P.Naidu

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Which version of 11.23 do you try to install ? It should be HP-UX 11i V2 May 2005 or later with HPVM 3.5

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Eric,
Its HPUX 11iv2 (June 2008)
I can't even do network install because my ignite server is running with C.7.7.98.

HPVM complaints about version mismatch of Client Ignite and Server Ignite.

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

This should not be a problem. Here is a thread to update clients's ignite version from ignite server : http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1301667

Anyway there is something I don't understand : the VM is not yet installed, right ? So how could the version of ignite in the VM being not up to date ? who is the client, who is the server ?

And "If I select all SCSI devices then devices are not visible on the INSTALL screen " ---> I realy can't beleive it. Post a new hpvmstatus -P of the VM please and a copy of install screen

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Eric,
You're correct, VM is yet not installed.
Since Operating system Install source is switching to network from Media. Installation session is assuming Client Ignite-UX Revision C.7.5.142 which is different then the Ignite Server Revision C.7.7.98.

Take a look in the below screen-shot,

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

"Install source is switching to network from Media" ok, I understood. I didn't know this feature ... So you can't modify ignite version on the CDROM :-((

2 things :

- if you really intend to install through an ignite server, forget booting from CD and follow traditional way : create a depot on an ignite server, create a dn profile at VM's EFI, and "lanboot select" the VM with the profile. You will have no more probleme between ignite's releases. Not sure, but I guess you will have some problems if you ignite through an "avio_lan" card. So work with a "normal" card of type "lan".

- in you last post, you have not posted the whole screen, I mean devices listed as potential source devices by installer ? And new "hpvmstatus ..." is also missing.

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Eric,
Before your suggestion came to me.
I've installed the Operating System 11.23 with the newly built Ignite. I got to release the HPVM to customer.
I'm lucky to have another machine to replicate the same situation. I'll get back to you for your valuable suggestions.
Thanks for your help.

Re: HPVM 3.50, HPUX Installation problem

Just a note about VMs and Ignite.

The vMP does not have the direct boot ability for ignite servers on different subnets.

It is simple to create a boot helper ISO image that is presented to the vGuest as vDVD then the Ignite versions will match and away you go.

-use make_media_install on the ignite server to create an iso image.
-ftp new iso to vHost
-preset that file as a vDVD file based backingstore to the vGuest.
-Boot from it.

You now have the Ignite installer running and can select an Ignite server installation.

make_media_install info can either be found in the Ignite admin guide or simply read the notes in the shell script found in /opt/ignite/data/scripts/examples/make_media_install
