I am new to HP-UX.
I have installed HP-UX 11i v3 in new 5 HP VMs.
I have checked if the CDE is installed:
# swlist -l product | grep -i CDE
CDE B.11.31 HP-UX CDE User Interface
I am able to connect X-Terminal through exceed and run graphical window / application (xclock).
But i am not able to connect GUI of whole server through XDMCP.
How to do solve this.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
With 11.31, CDE is an optional product. Select the CDE-xxx bundle where "xxx" is the language you want. You will find this bundle in your core OS DVD.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
Two additional items.
1) The font server is not run by default.
/sbin/init.d/xfs
Check /etc/rc.config.d/xfs
Set the start variable to 1.
2) XDMCP is blocked by some vlan configurations on the router. Try a direct connect after you have confirmed the font server is enabled.

Probably the second DVD, though I'm not positive. There should be an index (list of contents) on the DVDs that will guide you.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
To summarize:
CDE is not installed by default with 11.31
xfs is not configured to auto start.
Try reinstalling or installing CDE English, and make sure that font server is running before you do anything else.

>>>I have mounted second DVD<<
# cd /cdrom
# ll -d CDE

than did you change directory to CDE ?? and look for .depot files to install your software ??
or simple way if you are familer with "SMH" or "SAM" or you can simply type "swinstall" than follow
step 1:-
A_Server:/ # swinstall -> follow "Screen -driven"
step 2:-
Specify the source type, then host name, then path on that host
Source Depot Type: [ Network Directory/CDROM ->] [ Find Local CD ]
[ Source Host Name... ] A_Server
[ OK ] [ Cancel ] [ Help ]
step 3:- Go to Action ->Select->Software->Mark for Install-> Install

# swlist -l product | grep -i cde
CDE B.11.31 HP-UX CDE User Interface
You have checked to see if there is a SD product with CDE. But CDE-English is a SD bundle.
Just do:
swlist CDE-English
>Johnson: # cd /cdrom, then did you change directory to CDE? and look for .depot files
You shouldn't be looking inside your depot. /cdrom is the directory depot.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
Now i have installed the CDE-English.
Then i have installed and started xfs.
For example:
# swlist -l bundle | grep -i cde
CDE-English B.11.31 English CDE Environment
# swlist -l product | grep -i cde
CDE B.11.31 HP-UX CDE User Interface
# vi /etc/rc.config.d/xfs
RUN_X_FONT_SERVER=1
CONFIG_FILE_NAME=/etc/X11/fs/config
# ps -ef | grep -i xfs
root 67 0 0 11:30:51 ? 0:00 vxfsd
root 1566 1 0 11:32:32 ? 0:00 /usr/bin/X11/xfs -config /etc/X11/fs/config -port 7000 -daemon -quiet_if_addrinuse
Now i am able to connect CDE through XDMCP.
But immediately after logged in to the server, i am getting one pop-up screen that has following meessage.
--------------------------------------------
Action Required
The desktop messaging system could not be started.
To correct the problem:
1. Choose [OK] to return to the login screen.
2. Select Failsafe Session from the login screen's option
menu and log in.
3. Check to see that the desktop is properly installed,
the hostname is correct (/etc/hosts) and that the
network is properly configured.
For additional information, see the CDE User's Guide.
--------------------------------------------
I am not able to close this screen, so i have pressed OK, after that my session is closing automatically.
I have checked /etc/hosts
# more /etc/hosts
10.250.0.187 emdlaghpvm03
127.0.0.1 localhost loopback
How to solve this issue.

Try with
#swinstall -s /cdrom and see your needed product is there in the first CD, if not umount and load the second.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
The issue is with /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Example:
--------------------------------------------
# more /etc/nsswitch.conf
passwd: compat
group: compat
hosts: dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
ipnodes: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
networks: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
protocols: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
rpc: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
publickey: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
netgroup: nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
automount: files nis
aliases: files nis
services: files
--------------------------------------------
Hi All,
As I told, this issue is being solved only for one server.
Actually I am having 5 HP VM servers running HP-UX 11i v3.
The mentioned issue is solved at only one server only, remaining four have the same issue.
I tried the steps, what i have used to solve that one working server, on all four servers. but still it is giving that error message.

Check these files and correct the entries if required for host name resolution on remaining 3 hosts.
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/hosts

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
I think if all five servers have the same /etc/resolv.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/hosts file and the hosts file includes all five systems, they will act the same way.

Re: I am not able to connect the GUI mode using XDMCP in HP-UX 11i v3
Actually first I tried on one server, the issue has been resolved after making some changes on /etc/nsswitch.conf.
So that I have replied that the issue has been solved.
But the same issue is having in remaining four server, I have verified the files /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts
between working server and non working servers.
All are same, but still the issue is not solved.

One more suggestion would be to check .profile and .dtprofile.
Can you create a test user and see, if this user can login.
I had the similar issue.
Cheers!!

The two files ".profile" and ".dtprofile" are available.
And I have created one test user and checked.
Still there is same issue.
