Identical mac address ????

Hello,

I have cloned a server with DD command on system disk (I haven't got tape drive to use ignite). All work properly except network card. I have the same mac address on both servers ???

Someone can help me ?
How can I "update" the mac address on the second server ? Where lanscan command get this information, in kernel ?

# lanscan
Hardware Station Crd Hardware Net-Interface NM MAC HP DLPI Mjr
Path Address In# State NameUnit State ID Type Support Num
8/16/6 0x080009B859CA 0 UP lan0 UP 4 ETHER Yes 52

I have exactly the same result on both server...

Thanks,

Re: Identical mac address ????

Check the config file this an uses.

ioscan -fnClan and then appropriate config file - such as /etc/rc.config.d/hpbtlan

Check for HP_BTLAN_STATION_ADDRESS[0]=
It should be blank.

Re: Identical mac address ????

Someone probably coded the MAC address into the interface config file. Check your /etc/rc.config.d/*conf file that corresponds to your NIC's driver:

btlan hpbtlanconf
btlan0 hpeisabtconf
btlan1 hpbasetconf
btlan3 hpbase100conf
btlan4 hpgsc100conf
btlan5 hppci100conf
btlan6 hpsppci100conf

I would recommend never coding the MAC address - just let the system read the hard-coded unique address from the card.

Re: Identical mac address ????

Now you know why Ignite/UX should be used to clone systems :) It does not require a tape drive. You would install the (free) Ignite software on the first system, generate a golden system image, and use that to install the second through Nth systems via the network.

In that way, you will not have issues when someone has set a specific MAC address in the aforementioned config files.

Unless there is some licensing issue with replaced LAN interface hardware, there should be little to no reason to configure a MAC address in the config files in the first place.
