Ignite recovery - rp8420 server
Just tried a test if it was possible to restore an L200 (HP-UX 11.00) to an rp8420. I have attached the error messages I received when trying to boot up off the ignite tape.
My question is, would anyone have a rough idea what the issues might be. I believe it is because rp8420 does not support HP-UX, but I've been told secretively (ssshhhhh), that it could work - perhaps that's why it was secretively.
Thanks
AC

Who said this. All of RP series supports only HPUx and nothing else.
The reason for this behavior is that you are trying to restore backup of a system onto a system with different architecture.

Re: Ignite recovery - rp8420 server
I meant to say rp8420 not supporting HP-UX 11.00

Re: Ignite recovery - rp8420 server
There is a huge architecture change in the two systems which is causing this. The rp8420 has PA-8900 (1.0 GHz, 1.1 GHz) or PA-8800 (900 MHz, 1.0 GHz) whereas your L2000 would have 875MHz PA-8700+ or 750MHz PA-8700 CPUs.
Apart from that you can not install a non supported OS onto a system in anyway.
These both reasons account for the problem here.

Re: Ignite recovery - rp8420 server
the issue is that the rp8420 does not support HP-UX 11.00, only 11.11 or 11.23.
you may be able to "restore" your L2000 to the rp8420, if you meet all of the following criteria:
- upgrade it to HP-UX11.11
- install latest HWE (hardware enablement bundle)
- install latest verion of Ignite-UX (6.x)
(once you succeed to boot do not forget to set the "cloning to different HW" flag)

Bernhard

Re: Ignite recovery - rp8420 server
The purpose of Ignite/UX is to create a bootable backup for the root disk. So if something happen on the system (boot disk crashed), you can restore immediate from the tape that has been created from the system previously.
The issues on yours are :
1. is the OS with the same level ?, as we know L-class cannot handle 11.23
2. the architecture between L-class and rp8420 is quite different; from CPUs, bus configuration is different. And if i'm not wrong, HP doesnt support to restore the Ignite/UX backup from different system model.
So it's a good reason to have an Ignite backup from it's system.
Hope this can help you.
Cheers,
AW
