igniting a client in a different subnet

I'm working in a multiplatform, multinetork environment. OV NNM is used on remote systems to monitor their remote networks. I want to be able to ignite these systems. Unfortunately the other unix systems (if any) on those networks are different flavours (Don't ask), so the use of a boot helper is out of the question. The Administering Ignite manual indicates that I could use the bootsys command to do this, but doesn't get into detail. There is no clear message as to how bootsys can do this for you in the man page either. My guess on how this works is this.
Bootsys -w system1:ip-address (where ip-address is the currently configured address of the system.)
Then bootsys pulls the install kernal down from the remote ignite server before booting.
Target system boots with ip-address from initial command.
Wouldn't bootsys have to configure the gateway also in order to find the ignite server?

Re: igniting a client in a different subnet

I'm still confused. Those answers talk about systems on the same subnet, or use a of a boothelper, of which I have neither. Can bootsys do this for me, and how will it configure the gateway? Note: THis is the first time I'm configuring an ignite server.

Re: igniting a client in a different subnet

Hi,

Setting up the boot helper:

1) Install Ignite-UX minimum core fonctionality on the helper.

2) On the helper, run the following command:
/opt/ignite/bin/instl_adm -t Ignite-UX_server_IP

3) Verify with :
/opt/ignite/bin/instl_adm -d

4) Specify a temporary IP adress for the helper in file:
/etc/opt/ignite/instl_boottab

Re: igniting a client in a different subnet

The boot helper has to be in the same network yes? There is only one hp system in this remote network, and I want to ignite it. So I CAN'T use the boot helper option.

Can I ignite a remote system in a different subnet without a boot helper?

I thought bootsys was the answer. Maybe I'm wrong.

Cheers...

Re: igniting a client in a different subnet

Ian,

Sorry, w/o the Ignite server OR the boothelper in the same subnet, you're not going to be able to Ignite that system.
Better break out the CDs or move the server into the Ignite subnet.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: igniting a client in a different subnet

Thanks for all your help. Sorry for the confusion. The adminstration manual led me astray with the use of the term remote.

That wasn't the answer I was hoping for, but a definitive one none the less. Thanks again. I'm off to France and Germany. Bummer!! :-)
