Informix ONTAPE backup to Ultrium failing

Informix 7.30.UC7
HP-UX 11.00

Device:
Manufacturer = HP
Product Id = Ultrium 1-SCSI
Product Revision Level = E24D

lssf on /dev/rmt/3m:
stape card instance 3 SCSI target 1 SCSI LUN 0 at&t best density available at address 0/12/0/0.1.0 3m

Minor number (Correct minor number for the tape device - hardware compression enabled indicates 00 at end):
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 205 0x031000 Nov 27 15:07 3m

In the online.log (Informix log) it indicates Level 0 Archive started on with a listing of spaces being archived, then Archive on ...spaces backed up... ABORTED. Aborted by client.

HP ran LTT on Ultrium and got 2.46:1 compression. The Informix database is currently 97GB. If I change onconfig settings, to 80GB for TAPESIZE the backup completes ... but on two tapes. When I indicate 200GB for Ultrium the above happens, thus no backup.

Any ideas from anyone?? This is a 20 pointer indeed !

Re: Informix ONTAPE backup to Ultrium failing

Steve,

The URL is my previous thread, when we installed the Ultrium. It did work excactly I wanted, did a backup in 2 hours flat (90 odd GB) onto Ultrium.

Now all thatm has changed is the DB size, about 97 GB now - and the backup does not work.

Good call on the STAPE patch, I found that last night and will load it next week.

Re: Informix ONTAPE backup to Ultrium failing

The lssf said best density - but doesn't say compression is enabled. The two are different.

Check out this device (non-rewind, compressed)

$ ll 2cnb
crw------- 1 root bin 205 0x0520e0 Nov 29 10:18 2cnb

$ lssf /dev/rmt/2cnb
stape card instance 5 SCSI target 2 SCSI LUN 0 berkeley no rewind compression type 1 best density available at address 0/3/0/1.2.0 /dev/rmt/2cnb

So this says compression type 1 is used as well as best density.

Mine is a non-rewind device (used for Veritas) that gives excellent compression.
The e in the minor number specifies that bits 1,2,3 are set (=2+4+8).
m=0, mb=8, mn=4, mnb=c, cnb=e, mc=2 (I think).

To have a compressed rewind device, I think you should try minor number 0x031020 or 0x0310a0.

I missed off this device from my previous posting by accident, which wasn't much help to you. Sorry.
