Inquiry on EMS event notification

Hi all,

Is it advisable to enable the EMS event notification for tape library on the system?

Is there any example to what level to enable it?

Is there any example for the event for the tape drive produced for Information, Minor Warning, Major Warning, Serious, Critical?

Is there any other montoring tool for tape drive and tape library fom HP?

Pls advice. Thanks.

Re: Inquiry on EMS event notification

Hi,

Since the library usually comes with the software management, so I dont enable EMS event notification for the tape library.

On the software itself, we can find the severity of the event on the software management.

You can also enable the EMS for this, but make sure you use the latest EMS software since the old version carries bugs :-).

Check this url for more info :

Hope this information can help you.

Re: Inquiry on EMS event notification

Hi Mei Jiao,

I wouldn't recommend enabling EMS events on tape devices.

Our experience has been that almost every type of event from the device is a critical event. Examples include:

end of tape (thus jukebox and backup software - legato networker in our case, inserts a new tape and continues the backup)

drive requires cleaning (same deal, jukebox inserts cleaning tape).

tape read error - you are probably doing a restore, and noticed this at the time.

You tried to read a tape with no tape in the drive using tar or other application, guess what, there's an error, you probably knew this already too.

Basically, most of the errors you will have already known. If it's a library like an HP MSL6060, you can configure it to send email alerts (which are also too verbose and not configurable), or SNMP events. If you use SNMP, you can use OpenView, or other management tool to filter the events better, and warn you based on types.

Most backup software will have a much more detailed log of what is happening in the backup environment than what comes out of EMS anyways.

Good luck,
DOn

Re: Inquiry on EMS event notification

The tape monitor and STM tools have been removed in the latest version of OnlineDiags, they are no longer supported, so I would advise against using them now.

HP does have another product, HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools. You can find out more about this at http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools

HP L&TT is free to download.
