install hp-ux 11i using ignite image

Hi,

We have a set-up consisting of 2 N-class servers connected to a XP 512 . Last week we installed the secondary server with
HP-UX 11i & related patches and applications. The system to date is fully operational. Question:
- can we just install the primary server with the ignite image?
- are there any advantages besides duration doing the ignite install method?
- are there any disadvantages doing an ignite image install?

Thanks in advance.

Hi ,
1) You can install primary server with ignite image
2) This is probably the fastest way of restoration
3) No disadvantages if backup cartridges are of good quality. It is advisable to limit only OS part in Ignite backup

Re: install hp-ux 11i using ignite image

Hi,

Can someone advise if they forsee any disadvantages of ignite installing a primary production server. Is it best practice to ignite install a primary production server?

Please advise!

Thanks

Edgar,

I can think of no disadvantages to doing this with Ignite. It's fast, it's accurate, and, if you've got the Ignite source configured exactly as your production server target is to be, it should be fool proof.

Re: install hp-ux 11i using ignite image

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the feedback. We would not want to follow an install route simply because the install time is less. Our concern is that of doing an ignite install on the PRIMARY PRODUCTION server! Is it commin practice that PRIMARY PRODUCTION servers are ignite installed? Or do you ignite install your PRIMARY PRODUCTION servers and has it been fool proof?

Thanks in advance!

Re: install hp-ux 11i using ignite image

Edgar, yes this is common practice I have done this many times. In your particular circumstance it sounds like the perfect way of installing. It will ensure your patch levels etc are identical on both servers and as the hardware is the same there is no problem. It is far quicker as has been stated and there is no added risk doing it this way infact it takes away risk in my opinion.

Re: install hp-ux 11i using ignite image

You could set yourself up an ignite ux server, do a make_net_recovery then build a golden image stanza inside the ignite-ux server. use this golden image to build your new system over the network.

since both boxes are the same hardware you can safely build multiple boxes with the same image.
