Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

I'm having problems installing an HP Surestore 40 drive on pa2470 running HP-UX v11. The drive is not detected at all.
Anybody with some experience please help out.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

You need the "stape" Driver.
You can check if this is enabled using SAM ==> Kernel Configuration ==> Drivers

If not, i am afraid you need to reboot, If it is in. Connect the DAT drive on the scsi port an make sure the scsi chain is terminated correct. Power on the tape drive and do an ioscan -fn followed by a insf.

Now you should be able to see the tape drive:
# ioscan -fnkCtape

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,
1. Try Power Cycling the drive if it is external one and then do "insf -e"
2. Check your drive status "ioscan -fnC tape"
3. See which device file is associated with your drive. e.g. /dev/rmt/0m
4. See if the SCSI cable is properly connected with proper terminators.
FInally, if possible try out with another DAT drive if you have on eto isolate the drive fault.

Hope that helps.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

the stape and other drivers needed for the tape are already bulid into the kernel, so no problem regarding this.

The drive is exteranl, and we are trying to connect it to 0/0/2/0, Narrow single-ended SCSI path. SCSI on the DAT drive itself is SCSI-LVD/SE, so it can go on the 0/0/2/0.

Thank you both for your answers anyway, and please advise if you know other details.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi Tasev,
Could u post following outputs:

1. # ioscan -fn
2. # ll /dev/rmt

That may help us in giving u exact inputs.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

You probably are using a wrong HBA to connect this drive. Check the supported HBAs for this DAT drive on the HP's website and confirm if they both will work together.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

it is positivly answered that the DAT drive is compatible with the SCSI adapters on the servers, 0/0/1/0 and 0/0/2/0.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

Check this URL ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/ebs/EBSMatrix-0804.pdf

and look at page21 for the supported SCSI HBAs for HP-UX.

I request you to check if you have one of those HBAs in your system.

Also, check if "lsdev" lists the stape driver.

Mohan.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

we are not using SCSI HBA, only the exsisting SCSI adapters/controllers on the server, one is 0/0/1/0 and other is 0/0/2/0 SCSI path.
This matrix that you have sent me is for HBA on PCI, we don't have them.

Thank you.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi G. Vrijhoeven,

I was following your step by step instructions, right now, but still the problem is not solved.
Can you please advise how to go on further?

Thank you.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Looks like I got it wrong.

I thought you mentioned rp2470 as your server. rp2470 systems have PCI I/O slots.

All the new HP9000 servers are having PCI I/O slots. If you have older systems like the k-class or the D/R class systems, then they are not PCI.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

yes, we have rp2470, but we are connecting the drive through SCSI controllers, on SCSI paths 0/0/1/0 and 0/0/2/0.

Thank you.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

The hardware path 0/0/1/0 is one of the places where you can connect this drive. But ensure there are no other devices in the same bus. This is the core I/O bus.

Follow the "getting started guide" provided earlier in the thread and set the dip switches accordingly, for the UNIX systems.

lsdev command should show "stape" as one of its driver.

If all the above have been tested and still you have problem, then your SCSI cable or the terminator or the DAT40 drive itself is DOA (dead on arrival). Contact the same channel where you purchased the drive from.

Cheers,
Mohan.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Make sure the tape drive's SCSI address is
NOT set to 7. The Surestores have an
address selector button on the back.

On single ended buses the physical length
of the SCSI cable is critical. The max
length of the cable is 3 meters or 1.5
meters, depending on how many devices are
on the chain.

Since the tape drive is LVD you would be
better off putting the tape drive on the
LVD bus 0/0/1/0. In particular, bus
0/0/2/0 is fast wide, so the tape will
have to switch down to fast speed.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Are you using the C5687C or the Tape Array 5300 (C7508A or C7508AZ) with the DAT40 module? The C5687AC should work with the 68 pin HD to 68-pin VHDCI connector cable LVD/SE cable, in to the 68 pin VHDCI connector of the rp2470 server. The SE port 50-pin port is too slow for this drive, the DAT24 would work with the SE port. The SCSI ID must be different from all other devices on that chain. If you have the TA5300 then you want the C7497B DAT40 Module. In this case you need the C2364A terminator and the C2362B cable, again the the 68-pin port.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

thank you for your answers.
What you say is that DAT24 should work better on the 0/0/1/0? But also it must work on the other one, right, although with slower performances. The problem is that this can not be seen as present hardware on the system, from the very begging on the system startup, if you search for bootable devices, it is not shown.
Here are the part numbers used:
DAT tape PN: C5683A
SCSI cable PN: C2957A
SCSI terminator PN: C2904A

Thank you.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Tell me onething
Are u newly installing the drive. Can u try recreating the device special files using "insf" command. As u said 'stape' driver is already bulit in to kernal check for proper scsi termination and connectivity.
Can u restart server and see.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

I already tried to recreate deice files with "insf -e". This is not a new DAT drive, it has already been conected to the other server and it was working.
The server with DAT drive connected and stape and other drivers installed has already been done several times, with different settings of the SCSI IDs, 1, 2, 8 etc.

Thank you.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

According to my information the C7497A and C7497B in the TA5300 tape array are LVD SCSI devices and I suspect that is true for the C5687A also. The quickspecs, at http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11883_na/11883_na.html, indicate that this is Wide Ultra SCSI 3 interface. It likely doesn't revert to high voltage narrow SE SCSI at the lower speed or isn't supported in HP-UX in that mode. The DAT24 will work with the 50-pin HV narrow SE interface. I don't seen any support for narrow SE interfaces for the DAT40 in the quickspec.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

The C5683A is a standalone DDS-4 Ultra320
drive (Wide bus, Ultra-3 speed, LVD
signalling). It should be compatible with
any Wide bus that is either SE or LVD.

If you can't even see the drive at the boot
prompt, then it's not an issue with the
device files or HPUX drivers. It's probably
an issue at the hardware level. Make sure
the cable and terminator are the right type.

The C2904A terminator is 68-pin SE, which is
OK, but you will be limited to SE
signalling.

However, are you sure the cable is a
C2957A? It looks like that's a 50-pin FWD
cable, which would not even physically plug
into the drive. You need a 68-pin cable
which supports LVD or SE signalling.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

The part numbers I posted are out of the HP configuration tool, which generates HP supported configurations.

Re: Installing HP DAT drive with HP-UX

Hi,

as per your instructions, I tried with another cable, SCSI 68 pin with 50 pin, suitable for the tape drive and 0/0/2/0. Still, I can't see the drive with ioscan.
As previously noted, all drivers are installed.
I also rechecked for the bootable HDD and it is on the 0/0/1/0 SCSI path with SCSI ID 15.
I also tried again with several SCSI IDs on the tape, but I still experiance the problem.

Please advise.
