installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

Hi evryone,
i'm a newbie in hp-ux.. :D
i kinda have a problem while installing hp-ux.
I'm using HP DL380 G5, i have 4 disks drive (146 GB each), and i plan to divide it into :
- 1 disk for OS and my core application
- 1 disk for mirror of the OS above
- 1 disk for Swap fs
- last disk for spare.
Is it possible to apply this kind of configuration?

For more information, in disk array configuration (when i press F8 in startup), i already made a logical disk consist of 2 disk (bay 1 and 2) with RAID 1+0, and using a spare (bay4).

And i made another logical disk with the remaining 1 disk as my swap.

anyway, sorry for this noobs-looking question, but can i install DL380G5 (proliant) using the hp-ux dvd bundled with rx7640 we've just purchased ? (which is integrity server)

Thx a lot for the response..^^

As far as I know, the DL380 is a Windoze machine - you can't install HP-UX on it.

Shalom,

You can not install HP-UX on a DL380 G5.

HP-UX 11 v2 runs on Itanium (IA-64) and PA-RISC based HP systems, not the model you are tying to install it into.

It will install onto the rx7640 it shipped with.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

okay..now i see..
so it's a mistake from the very start.. :)
thx for the fast reply.
i thought it'd be safer if i try to install the smaller server first, but we're gonna install it in rx7640 anyway.
So, is the configuration i mentioned above works in rx7640?
- 1 disk for OS and my banking core application
- 1 disk for mirror of the OS above
- 1 disk for Swap fs
- last disk for spare.

with each disk capacity is 146 GB.
Does anyone have better idea on this partitioning thing?

And do you think 146 GB is too large just for swap file system? what if i use 73 GB instead? so there'll be 3 disk @ 146 GB and 1 disk at 73 GB.. will it affect the other 146 GB disks?
thx again.. :D

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

Have a look at the following web page:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-1978/ch02s03.html

That is the list of server models that is officially supported with HP-UX 11iv2 (11.23). Note that there are NO Proliant servers listed.

HP-UX will DEFINITELY NOT run on a DL380.

However, you could run Linux on a DL380 G5 quite easily. I've got 6 of the DL380 G5 servers running SuSE Linux right now and they are working VERY WELL.

As far as your configuration is concerned, it looks OK to me. The only question I would raise is whether or not you want your banking core application housed on the same disk as your OS. The standard recommendation is to install the OS and user data on separate disks, though, with 146GB disks, that can lead to a bit of wasted space. Just keep in mind that your backup and recovery procedures will have to take into account that you have user data mixed in with your OS.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

ok..i'll keep in mind about the mixed root and data in one disk.
I still have one question about what spare disk is.. how does it work actually? does it automatically replace a failed disk? and in my configuration above, which disk will it replace?
thx

Are you saying there are 4 drives in the DL380? If so, I'm afraid I can't help you - I don't do windows. If the disks are in some sort of separate array, then that needs to be identified so we can give you a specific answer.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

There are a dozen good ways to set up HP-UX and they all depend on what you are going to do with the machine.

I use the base default installation on the OS DVD as a start point. I generally add some space to root to deal with mistakes and used fixed file system size instead of the defaults.

I set the sizes of my filesystems based on the requirements of the applications I plan to install. I keep system software and tools in /usr and /opt and products like Oracle in their own filesystems.

Basic rule, let the planned use of the machine dictate setup.

If I have two disks, I use mirror/ux an add in program that costs money to mirror the boot disk. Its a real bummer when an important system won't boot because one of its system disks is destroyed.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

BTW Pete its not a Windoze machine. Its quite capable of running Linux.

I work with a lot of DL380 machines and they are really excellent for non-HP-UX machines.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

If you have 4 disks installed, use 1 for the OS, one for data/application and mirror both.

I don't think you need one disk for swap only, but make always sure to mirror all of the swap.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: installing hp-ux 11.23 v.2

Well Pete,
i am designing the configuration for rx7640, not the DL380.. and same to you, we dont do windows..^^
when i press F8 while it boot (in disk array configuration), then we can configure the logical drive.. there we can specify wether we use spare disk or not. That's the spare disk i questioned.. :D
how does it actually work? if one of my disk fail, -let's say, the OS disk-,which disk will it replace? and will the content of this spare disk exactly the same as the failed one? maybe there's sum document reference i can read? thx alot guys.. :D
