Re: Installing HP UX from Lan

First off, I don't believe you can install 11i on any 712 workstation. At least 128MB memory is required and most of these older machines do not have it. If you are one of the lucky ones with enough memory, you are still out of luck with the booting off of the Laptop's CD-ROM drive. The workstation can boot off of the LAN but it has to talk to a bootp server which will direct it to a place to get its OS.

Your intel based laptop, and 712/80 can not express one to another, hence boot operation does not work.

If your 712 is on a lan with other hp servers, check to see if there is any ignite servers setup on the LAN. If so, you can install using an ignite server. Otherwise, consider investing a few dollars worth of money to get an external SCSI cd-rom, something like 2X, which sometimes can be found in garage sales as a mcintosh drop out.

This is HP-UX support matrix,

It is not possible to install 11i on your box.

Re: Installing HP UX from Lan

You can use your notebook as a dumb(slightly smarter than that) terminal to handle a supported OS install on an HP-UX box.

You hook your laptop comm port to the HP-UX machines console port with a null modem cable and you are officailly in business.

You'd user hyperterminal as a comm program.

Now all you need is a version of HP-UX that your 712/80 supports.

Re: Installing HP UX from Lan

Firstly, that worksatation is not supported on HP-UX 11i.
Secondly, you would need another server set up as an Ignite server on the network to install from the network.
You cannot use a notebook as an install device, other than as a dumb terminal

Re: Installing HP UX from Lan

I don't know if it is possible to put 11i on this workstation or not, however, I did find that even though the matrix listed in a previous reply shows that 11i is not supported on a G class system, I have been able to get it installed fairly easily. You can go with the suggestion of an Ignite server, but getting the BCH on that system to understand what LAN device to boot may be difficult. I would recommend using and external CD drive and attemping the install that way.
