ioscan shows no_hw

We had a single-ended scsi tape drive go bad and an ioscan shows no_hw. We replaced the drive and it still shows no_hw. Are there any commands I can run to get the drive back or am I stuck with a reboot?

Shawn,

How are you running your ioscan? You need to query the hardware not the kernel, so if you're using "ioscan -k", you shouldn't be.
Try "ioscan -fn" - if that doesn't do it, I think you'll have to reboot.

insf to install the new special files. Was it the same type of tape device? I would of assumed it would of used the old driver.

Hi,

I am afraid you will have to load the stape driver in the kernel. So you will have to reboot.

Re: ioscan shows no_hw

I think you're probably stuck with the reboot unfortunately. The only command I know is ioscan. Just make sure you're not running the version in the kernel. Just issue a : ioscan -fn and if your tape drive still shows NO_HW, then you'll have to reboot. If it still shows NO_HW after your reboot, then maybe it wasn't your tape drive that had an issue.

Hi

ioscan -fnCtape C represent class tape and saves scanning all your hardware

Same drive. Running ioscan -fnC tape. Looks like a reboot. Thanks

Re: ioscan shows no_hw

have you checked to make sure the scsi cable is properly connected, if it is I think you are going to have to reboot.

To the point:

check cableing, power termination of the device, anything chained off of it.

Did you set the scsi address properly when installing the device?

Did it ever work? If not is stape in the kernel(still should be claimed) drivers section.

Re: ioscan shows no_hw

Looking at the wording of your original posting I'm a little worried that you connected the tape drive without powering everything down first. Please put my mind at rest!

If the server was turned on, then try a hard reboot and hope everything is still working.

Internal hot swappable drive. HP replaced the drive so I hope they set everything correctly. Just trying to avoid working another Sunday @ 02:00

Re: ioscan shows no_hw

Though I may be mistaken, I've rarely heard of Internal hot swappable. Every time I had to deal with a server that had something internal to be replaced, it always needed to be booted.

Re: ioscan shows no_hw

Hi

when HP changed the drive did they shut the server down ?

I presume we are talking about an internal tape drive not external please advise.

I dont believe there are hot plugable tape drives can you post the model number for us to check.

John
Looks like you are right. HP told us that the drive was hot pluggable but we may need to reboot afterwards in order to see the drive. But I was just informed that the change was canceled because the server needs to be powered down. No avoiding Sunday morning work.
