Re: IPL and ISL

Hi Shiv,

IPL, PDC and ISL is booting stages machines specific, but not OS version specific.

On PDC, it's specific to the machine model generation. (ex. K-class & D-class almost the same, but different with N-class).

Hope this can help you.

Cheers,

Re: IPL and ISL

Hi Shivkumar

PDC is like a BIOS of the computer.

then it will check from which disk to boot and it starts from that disk.

If ISL/IPL is like a bootblock resides in first few sectors of the hard disk.

"search" command in PDC will check for the ISL/IPL in the hard disk.

and it will report it to you.

Re: IPL and ISL

Yes SHiv,
they are version specific and with HP-UX 11.23 things have changed even further.

To check the PDC version go to the BCH
BOOT CONSOLE HANDLER
INFORMATION menu
1. Display Firmware / PDC Revision of the Server:
Information Menu: Enter command > FV
FIRMWARE INFORMATION
Firmware Version: 41.39
Information Menu: Enter command >

From the Processor Dependent Code (PDC), the BOOT command loads Initial System Loader (ISL) from the boot device. At ISL, the operating system, or stand-alone utilities, can be loaded from the boot device. Using the HELP command at ISL displays the available options.

thanks

Re: IPL and ISL

Hi Shiv

IPL,PDC & ISL are machine specific and not operating system specific.

We must keep them updated since latest versions have bug fixes and improved support of hardware components
