Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Im hearing some news about the HP dropping HPUX and switching to Linux. If this is true, what are the timelines?

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Well, if that were true, I think you'll have to wait a while. Linux is not good on PA-RISC so you are going to have to wait at least until HP have dropped that processor. I woudln't hold my breath waiting if I were you!

for the future we will never know, until 12-2006 11.0 is supported, 11.i has to be determined yet.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Frankly.. I think it may very well be if the March to commoditization continues and HP does not allow it to run on other non-HP IA64 platforms. But even on their IA64 platforms -- a user has a choice: Windows 2003 (which is impressive - despite its security shortcomings), OpenVMS and of course Linux.
.
Commoditization.. it is here it is now. But HPUX skills will never be a commodity.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Hello,

This is a pure hoax.

HP's plans are determined : HP-UX remains the #1 OS on existing and future architectures.

Linux is also supported on IA32, IA64 platforms but once again HP-UX remains the golden OS.

Hope this helps,

Do you have any links for the news. I havnt heard anything like that. But I have heard and read IBM will favour linux than AIX in future.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

I think that HP and IBM have seen the light. If they move to a more "common" kernel, then they can focus there energies on SERVICE and SOFTWARE which have higher profit margins than OS's and HARDWARE.

Each will have their "own look and feel", but the kernel be the same. Imagine being able to purchase the best hardware from HP or IBM, then being able to select which OS you want!

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

I cant imagine this will be true any time in the near future.

In fact, HP is extending some of the pmC OS lines to have LONGER lives since many customers have installed bases and want more machines on the same OS.

I think you'd be looking at 5 years out or later before hp-ux started to go away.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Its not true. HP were thinking about it a while back but HP-UX is used by many large companies for critical applications, and it has had years of development which makes it so reliable. To force all these large companies to move off HP-UX to Linux would be crazy, and HP wont do it.

Im sure HP will continue to offer whatever customers want and sells well. We dont want to move off HP-UX, and until applications perform as well, and are cheaper on Linux than HP-UX, then why on earth move to Linux (eg. Oracle is the same price on HP-UX and Linux [licenses based on cpu] and oracle doesnt perform was well on Linux as on HP-UX)

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

HPUX will be about for at least another decade
HP are taking notice of IBM's big push into the Linux market which they are doing quite well.

HP are also sponsoring this years Linux Expo in London so i think it's a watch this space answer.

Hi Roland,

Is this what you're referring to?

Nothing wrong with trying to lure your competitors customers over. Note that it's to Intel systems, not PA-RISC.

Summary:

You heard wrong.

Linux is going to put pressure on HP-UX, but as a heavy user of both, I can tell you what HP-UX does better.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

The *real* question is will AIX/Solaris still be being actively developed in 5 years time?

And no, I don't work for HP!

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

I have to agree with duncan. AIX especially. IBM is already starting to abandon it. Hopefully HP will not see the new Linux opportunities that are here as a result of the Itanium processor as a reason to abandon something that has proven itself as well as HPUX.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

One thing to note, HP never has been successful in dropping support on anything. They're still actively selling HP3000 servers until oct. 31 of this year! Plus, HP always commits to at least 5 years of continuing support once a product reaches obsolesence. HPUX 11.0 was released in 1997, and will reach EOS in 2006. HP still has plans to keep upgrading HPUX (on Itaniums) well into the future. If **HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING** HP decided to discontinue HP-UX with the release of 11.30 (11i v 3.0) which will probably be released in 2005 or so, I cannot see them EOS'ing HP-UX until after 2025-2030, given that HP-UX is more widespread than MPE was, and HP STILL hasn't gotten rid of it (no offense to anyone running MPE). Anybody here older than 35-40 will probably be retiring by then, and anybody younger will starting a consulting business to support the people that are pissed off at HP for discontinuing HP-UX. So I don't think anyone here has anything to worry about. :)

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

Never heard of that one.

Everybody is cutting into everybodies else's market because HW sales are so bad. Servers are cheap and getting cheaper. Manufacturering is expensive as is labor. To survive means going with the least expensive HW and O/S and to do so means anything not proprietary.

HP-UX is proprietary. You pay a license to use HP-UX. Linux has no license and it runs on the cheapest server HW.

So what HP is trying to do is what everybody is trying to do, provide outsourcing support across all platforms because support is now more profitable than HW or O/S sales.

Because support will always be there.

Hi

I heard the other day that Sun have found $900 million of debt after announcing they had made $1 million in profit. Has anyone else heard this ?

Saw this about SUN, dated 8/13/03:

Moody's said in a statement: "The review of Sun Microsystems' long-term rating follows a negative outlook assigned to the senior unsecured debt in September 2001, and reflects the continued decline in operating performance and limited profitability since the outlook change. Sun's worldwide market share in computer servers continues to be challenged by gains in lower cost Linux and Windows-based servers from competitors."

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

The next version of HP-UX (version 12.0) will also be the next version of Tru64 (Compaq). HP is going to merge these systems and use the best from both (ie HP-UX12.0 will use Tru64 clustering). Last I heard the timeline for this was 2005.

Re: Is HPUX out? Is LINUX in?

I think the real Question should be:
.
Is UNIX out? Is LINUX in?
.
And the reality - COMMODITIZATION is here and is now. Let's face it, commodity hardware has a higher TCA, TCO and any TC? out there. And COMMODITIZATION brings choice of OS environments: UNIX, Windows, Linux and other obscure OS's. With the exception of IBM and SUN, practicaly all top IT vendors are following the track of the commoditazation bandwagon and now relying on commodity CPU's -- ie. IA64, IA32 and X86-64. Only the large corporates (Fortune50) IT organizations are still resisting the realities of commoditization for obvious reasons (job security)...

Hello again,

>Im hearing some news about the HP dropping

>true, what are the timelines?

I would be interested to know the source of such rumours/hoaxes.

I'm working for HP and i can certify you that HP-UX is the golden #1 OS for the future. HP-UX is now ported on IA-64 and more and more enhancements/features/fixes are being included thru releases.

Even if HP supports other OS : Linux, OpenVMS, etc... it's up to customers based on their preferences, budgets and platforms to choose.

Hope this clarifies,

Bye.
