IS this DIR needed

Hello:

I am trying to clean up my 11i machines and I came across this DIR and I was not sure if it was needed. /var/adm/sw/save/

Does anyone know if this is needed and if so for what? It is owned by root and has been dormant for 1.5 yrs......

1.5 yrs? Is that how long it's been since you applied a patch?

The directory is used to store patches. As to "can you remove it" well, that depends upon your needs.

Harry:

No that is the strange thing. I have installed several patches since that time. When you say it depends on my needs, could you please explain? Will it render the OS unstable if removed? What would be some uses for the files within this directory after a patch has been installed?

Re: IS this DIR needed

Scott,

Do a man on cleanup:

man cleanup

cleanup - HP-UX 11.11 patch cleanup utility

If you don't have this patch get it, install it, then do a man and pick the options you want. This is SAFER than manually deleting any patches.

Re: IS this DIR needed

Scott,

The /var/adm/sw/save directory holds the copies of patches that are saved so that you can do a rollback of the patch if necessary. When you 'swinstall' a patch, it goes in the 'applied' state, and a copy of the patch files are put in /var/adm/sw/save. If you decided in the future that you need to remove the patch, you can rollback the patch and the old files are copied back from /var/adm/sw/save. If you decide to commit the patch using 'swmodify', the copies are removed from /var/adm/sw/save and the patch state changes to 'committed'. After that you can't rollback the patch.

As Harry mentioned, you should look at the 'cleanup' utility as it will help you manage the /var/adm/sw/save directory.

Here is a URL to a document that discusses the directory and patching:
