ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

I noticed a lot of (very) good answers this week, and an frightening amount of (very) good answers that did get no points assigned.
I also noted some new posters just gave a bunny (the full 10 points) to every answer they got.
Neither is good for this forum.

10354 points this week. 318 posts (113 questions, 205 answers).
16 promotions and 25 waiting in line.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

You may invite me, but don't expect too much.

My laptop's harddisk just crashed unrebootable. I used that box for congrats.

Replacing the disk is not the hardest problem, but how do I get the data from the old disk, including the system, back to live?

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Probably my laptop will be returned with a new blank disk

How do I get the content of the old disk (block 16 unreadable) back to life?

I have /some/ backups, but I will have no backup of my bookmarks and so on.
Since my laptop was very ... errr ... alive, LOTS changed every day, and making 40 Gb backups every day of a 4200 rpm laptop disk just takes away the fun

Second problem is that you cannot place a laptop disk in a workstation/pc/server/... and use dd/perl/c/... to see what is left to extract. The connectors are ... errr ... different.

So fore home-work, I have revived cygwin to an acceptable level: ssl/ssh/rsync all work fine now, but cygwin's X-server still refuses HP's X forwarding.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

hmmm.... well... Try to install a linux rescue system on a memory stick (http://slax.linux-live.org/?lang=en for example). Get it with a good network module available and also module for the FS you have on the disk. dd it thhrough network to a distant file (yeah, I know 40GB is big) then you may be able to dd it the other way to the new disk on a secondary partition (if disk is bigger) or an other machine...

It may only be a good lookin therory, but it may work.

Good luck,

Fred

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

I understand your laptop os is not windows so I'm not able to help you :-(
Uwe's link is a good starting point.
After you reinstall new hd, you could use usb portable hd like follow
http://www.usb-2-0.com/usb-2-0-hard-drive.html
http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/5ad4/
http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-usb-2-hard-drive-kit.htm
and many other devices.
You can backup every day form internal HD to external usb box in little time.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Once the new disk is up and running, Uwe's link will have to help me with restoring what I've lost.

The OS is NOT the problem. Yes, the laptop does not run Winblows (of course). It ran SuSE 9.3 Linux, and it will run that again.

My workstation is SuSE 9.2, so I've got all I want - OS wise. Including bootable DVD's and such.

More points to earn in giving me the best link to (reiser)FS recovery sw. No points for NTFS or FAT support. My FS is reiserfs. I already planned to use either dd (which might stop dead on the bad blocks), perl or dedicated C to read the old disk once the `Uwe'-device is installed (my colleage ordered one from a european site, he also thought it a good idea to have that available anyway).

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Again, I am NOT in search of backup programs or hardware. We are already in the process of setting up a 8 Tb backup system.

I also *do* have backups of the vital data, I will just be missing the personal things. It was just a very inconvenient moment to happen, but that is probably always the case isn't it?

Once the new disk is up, it's just a question of re-installing Opera, rsync the forum data and on we go.

"More points to earn in giving me the best link to (reiser)FS recovery sw."

I must have misunderstood it but there is no recovery without backup...

"but that is probably always the case isn't it?"

I think so. I do backup my personal stuffs but only on a monthly base.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Of course there is recovery without backup: recover from the crashed source, whatever that is.

I have quite some experience now with recovering the DATA from a crashed NTFS partition, which even the commercial products were unable to revive, using the NTFS kernel drivers from Linux, I read the still intact disk block by block and recovered 18 Gb of data files!

I want some software that will help me recovering the data files (maybe even the complete FS structure) from a crashed disk of which certain blocks are so damaged that they won't read.

See this as if you always made a complete backup, and your backup media was damaged.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Before you service the laptop:

http://www.sysresccd.org/

Download the distribution, make a cd and boot off of it.

I'm almost sure you will be able to recover almost any file you need off that disk.

Its the tool I use to rescue many linux and windows laptops. Kinda funny having to use Linux to save windows isn't it.

Steven, I might receive my laptop back today.
I'll try that out, and assign points after that :)

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Hi Merijin,

This is not recovery, it's rescue...

Partition Magic 8 (Symantec) supports extendedx partitions (Linux kernels below 2.2 do not support extendedx).

Great Merijn,

You won't be able to fix it. You will be able to access it and get a lot of files off of it with rescuecd.

Glad to hear from you.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Knopix is a linux version. you can boot any machine and it will load drivers and peripherals as it was fully installed(it will not touch or modify your disk, however you need good memory space better 512mb). I believe that you can mount your HD and you can recover all your files and even you can ftp'ed to any other system in the network. I hope it helps.

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

Memory Stick Operating Systems, Knoppix or whatever OS to boot from is - as said before - not the problem. I have several ways to boot from CD and access hard drives.

SEP's solution was better than most posted here, because:
- it *shows* hard-disk errors, but continues where other bootable OS's would stop
- it includes partion magic in all aspects, which could be used to make drive images

BUT - as also said before - my disk is severely damaged, and none of the products I have had at hand where able to recognize even part of the file system that was on it before the crash, and even partitionmagic refuses to make a partition dump.

Windows products are neither fun nor funny, because as I originally stated, it was a reiserfs file system before the crash, and MicroShit has problably never heard of it, so chance that they can read it or even recover files from it is like 20 years from now: science fiction.

Sorry SEP, rescuecd didn't help me either

Re: ITRC Forum statistics for June 2005

I'm still lloking or open to suggestions, and probably always will. You get one point for trying, but the next who posts a link to NTFS/FAT will get none.

I had a crash of a disk with a REAL OS installed. I don't need, and hope I never have to, recover NTFS or FAT.

ReiserFS was on the disk and all stuff I tried didn't even recognize it was on the disk in the first place. Most sectors are unreadable.
