Jet Direct J2552A firmware upgrade

I have some old Jet Direct J2552A in a number of printers. Since upgrading our computers to Windows XP from Windows 98 it is not possible to use any of the printers. Many of the threads in this forum suggest that I must upgrade the firmware which in all but one is version A3.16.
What must I do to upgrade the firmware to the latest possible version?
One of the threads I have read suggest that I must upgrade in two steps by first using download manager version 2.25 but this doesn't appear to be available on the web site.

Re: Jet Direct J2552A firmware upgrade

Hi,

there is a WinXP Version of the Jetdirect Download manager:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=13218&prodTypeId=13037&prodSeriesId=27355&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228

Starting at www.hp.com navigate

HP Software+Driver Downloads -> Printing+Multifunction -> Network Print Servers -> Jetdirect Download manager

That has helped up to a point but now I find that the download manager appears to halt when attempting to upgrade the firmware. I have chosen to download the download manager with firmware option. Is this correct?
What else might cause the upgrade to halt at 10%?

Re: Jet Direct J2552A firmware upgrade

Hi,
it's long ago since I used the download manager ...
Do you really have a correct network configuration for this printer(s)?
Check

telnet printername

telnet printer-IP

Re: Jet Direct J2552A firmware upgrade

I will check your suggestions and let you know, however, I have a different problem now. During my attempts to get this upgrade to work I tried turning off the VPN client on my network interface. This appeared to help initially as the upgrade looked like it was going to take place, although it looked quite slow. Leaving the computer overnight I found that it had made no progress at all.
I will try using a crossed network cable to connect the computer and printer point-to-point to see if that helps.
Should I turn off the firewall?

Re: Jet Direct J2552A firmware upgrade

Thanks for all your help. I have solved it at last by installing the IPX/SPX protocol.
The help and Readme files suggest that this protocol is not needed and that the upgrade can be performed using TCP/IP alone.

Thanks again.
