JETADMIN error: "xset" command fails. Cannot display DeviceMonitor.

Hello all!
I receive the following error when I try to display my printers that are configured in jetadmin (option 5).
5) Printer Status:
- show printer status, location, and contact

Just thought to let you know I have been doing a clean-up of services in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf so I might have unknowingly remmed a service that this command needs.

Any help is much appreciated!

Do you have lib c patch PHCO_19691 installed (latest = 28425) then I'd suggest you put on a later patch as this could well be a known issue.

Hi,
It is simple: you don't have a good DISPLAY variable.
Do "#export DISPLAY=my_screen_ip:0.0"
and it should be fine if you have any X display, because this menue try to launch an X application.

if it were a DISPLAY issue I don't think the jetadmin gui would run at all, I suspect the problem is specific to option 5 or rather what it calls behind the scenes.

jetadmin is a text base gui not X, and the option 5 is X, try on your system, I've just do it, without DISPLAY, I've exactly the error described.

OK I jumped the gun, first off where are you running the jetadmin comand, it will need to be running an Xserver to support graphics/GUI's.

If that checks out and Bruno's suggestion does not resolve, look around for a core file and run file core, report back info, along with where jetadmin command is kicked off from and if the named libc patch is/is not installed.

Appologies Bruno I did not test the theory but there was a known issue that created the exact same error and was connected with the above libc patch.

Just a note: JetAdmin and the device monitor program have been obsolete for several years (not Y2K compliant). The replacement application is HP Printer Installer available from the HP website. The (rather useful) device monitor program was dropped from HPPI.

You can run xjdm by hand (jetadmin not needed). It's located in the /opt/hpnp/bin directory. Start the program with:

/opt/hpnp/bin/xjdm -display your_IP_addr:0

If you get an error about not being authorized, your Xwindow display device (probably a PC) is misconfigured and will not allow a remote program to display things on your PC.

Thanks GUYS!!! The problem is exactly that my DISPLAY variable was not set. I was unaware that option #5 was gui.
