JetDirect for UNIX: Neccesssity for "-i printerID" in addqueue for HP Printers

If I am adding HP Printers, do I need to specify "-i printerID" or can I just skip it it will just be "auto-detected"?

I understand it needs to be specified for non-HP printers.

It's just that we have literally hundreds of HP Printers that we are converting to Network Printers (via JetDirect) from being simply remote printers for better queue reliability and recoverability.

Thanks...

Nelson,

For what it's worth, I've never specified the "-i printerID".

Re: JetDirect for UNIX: Neccesssity for "-i printerID" in addqueue for HP Printers

Hi,
if
- it is a HP printer
- hppi recognizes the printerID
- there is a model script fitting for the printer

the hppi will choose the printerID by itself.

For newer HP printers, there may be a (better) model script available online, so you perhaps better download all of the new stuff before installing.

Re: JetDirect for UNIX: Neccesssity for "-i printerID" in addqueue for HP Printers

Both hppi and addqueue will ID the printer automatically. If it is not an HP printer or it is a 'dumb' printer like some DeskJets or OfficesJets, you'll be asked for a printer ID. Most all LaserJets (but not all) can be added automatically). The ones that can't are probably "Windows printers', a euphomism denoting a printer with no formatter and thus, no ability to print plain ASCII files. These printers have only Windows-based formatters and useless on HP-UX or any other platform. Here is a location to pickup additional model scripts for hppi and addqueue:
