Re: JFS3.3

Hi:

JFS version 3.3 offers improved abilities to shrink filesystems dynamically (i.e. online). Earlier versions often failed. ACL (Access Control Lists) are also supported, and installation no longer requires a reboot.

See these two documents for further information:

Re: JFS3.3

Hi:

In general, 3.3 outperform 3.1 slightly. You also get a new utility vxtunefs to assist you.

The biggest difference is that you now get Access Control Lists just like HFS had for many years and like the Apollo Domain OS had for many years before that.

Re: JFS3.3

JFS 3.3 offers a new filesystem lay-out (version 4) where JFS 3.1 uses version 3. You can still use and create version 3 filesystem layouts when JFS 3.3 is active. Further advantages are part of filesystem layout version 4, not of the JFS 3.3 product itself.

Filesystem version 4 should be more performant than filesystem version 3 and uses POSIX ACL's. Be sure your backup software can handle these POSIX ACL's.

JFS 3.3 has a different way of licensing the on-line JFS product that you can use to dynamically shrink, defragment, ... filesystems. Now you only need to install a license and the product is active. With JFS 3.1 you had to install aditional software and reboot your system.

Re: JFS3.3

Unfortunately weve found the advantages to be not worth the additional expense. OK, you now have more chance or reducing a filesystem - but with disk space so cheap lets face it - how often do you really need to reduce a filesystem nowadays ? And ACL's - who really uses them.

We wish we hadnt wasted the money upgrading to JFS 3.3

Re: JFS3.3

From a DB Server standpoint, we purchased the Online JFS 3.3 product to take advantage of the Direct IO capablities it offers. We found that it provided a good performance boost to our DB's disk IO.. Well worth the upgrade.. ;-)

Re: JFS3.3

You dont need JFS 3.3 to get the direct IO capabilties for databases. Ordinary, cheaper, OnlineJFS will do this also.
